It can be harmless flexibility, but when it comes with pain, instability, repeated injuries, or problems with everyday activities, it may be part of a clinical condition.
In a Vogue interview published January 4, 2023, Billie Eilish said her movement coach, Kristina Cañizares, helped her understand that she had a condition called hypermobility after years of lower-body injuries and misdiagnoses. Vogue did not report that Eilish had hypermobility spectrum disorder (HSD) or hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS).
What does it mean to be hypermobile?
Joint hypermobility describes a greater range of movement in one or more joints than is typical. “Double-jointed” is a colloquial term for this kind of flexibility; it does not mean a person has extra joints. The Ehlers-Danlos Society explains that joint hypermobility can occur without symptoms. Flexibility alone is not evidence of an illness.
Hypermobility may matter medically when it is associated with joint instability, injuries, pain, or difficulty with daily activities. People’s symptoms and effects vary, so the term does not by itself describe how much difficulty someone has.

What did Billie Eilish say about her hypermobility?
In Vogue’s January 2023 cover story, Eilish connected learning about her hypermobility with a history of lower-body injuries and being misdiagnosed. She described feeling that “my body was gaslighting me for years.” That remark speaks to her experience; it is not a medical definition or a diagnosis beyond the wording Vogue reported.
The interview is a dated account. It says Eilish had a condition called hypermobility, but does not identify HSD or EDS as her diagnosis.

How are hypermobility, HSD, and hEDS different?
These terms are related, but they are not interchangeable labels or a simple scale of severity. The distinction is whether the term describes joint movement itself or a clinical condition, and each diagnosis requires clinical assessment.

Because these concepts are distinct, a report that someone is hypermobile is not enough to conclude that they have HSD or hEDS.

How is joint hypermobility assessed?
A clinician can consider joint movement alongside a person’s symptoms and medical history. The NHS describes the Beighton scoring system as one way clinicians assess joint mobility. A score or a single flexibility maneuver is not, on its own, a diagnosis; avoid using one to diagnose yourself or someone else.
If you think you or your child may have joint hypermobility syndrome, the NHS recommends contacting a GP. Persistent pain, instability, or repeated injuries are also reasons to seek advice from a qualified clinician.

What care may help when hypermobility causes symptoms?
Care depends on the person’s symptoms and needs. The Ehlers-Danlos Society describes HSD management as individualized, with physical therapy and pain management among possible components. No single exercise, device, or product is a universal treatment.
The NHS offers general self-care guidance for joint hypermobility syndrome, including gentle exercise and avoiding overextending joints. It says insoles may be considered when recommended by a podiatrist. These are general recommendations, not a substitute for an assessment or a guarantee that a particular approach will help.
