In a Rolling Stone cover interview published April 24, 2024, Billie Eilish described depression as a long-running part of her personal experience and said the previous summer had been especially difficult. She was speaking about herself—not offering a clinical assessment or speaking for everyone who experiences depression.

What Billie Eilish said about depression

Eilish made the remarks in an interview published ahead of her album Hit Me Hard and Soft, released May 17, 2024. ABC News reported that she described experiencing depression throughout her life while also being able to feel joy and laugh.

“I experience joy and laughter and I can find fun in things, but I’m a depressed person.”

That sentence reflects her account of living with both difficult and positive feelings. It should not be read as a diagnosis made by a clinician or as a universal description of depression. ABC News’s April 24, 2024 report attributes the quotation to the Rolling Stone interview.

Why she said the previous summer was difficult

In the same interview, Eilish described the previous summer as a particularly hard period. She spoke about anxiety over how people treated her and how remarks she made could become headlines, as well as concerns about her safety and privacy.

“I’ve suffered with a lot of depression my whole life.”

She also recalled feeling so low that she did not want things to improve:

“I don’t care. I don’t even want it to get better.”

These are her words about a difficult stretch, not evidence that public scrutiny alone caused her depression. The interview offers her perspective on that period rather than a clinical explanation.

Who helped her cope

Eilish identified family members, including her brother Finneas, and her friend Zoe Donahue as people who helped her through the difficult period. Her account names sources of support in her own life; it does not prescribe a particular approach for others.

In her account, that recognition became part of a turning point. She did not present it as a formula for recovery or as proof that one specific change treats depression.

What the interview does—and does not—establish

This was personal testimony in a music-magazine interview, not a mental-health study, diagnosis, or treatment recommendation. Eilish discussed her feelings and circumstances in the context of an interview published before Hit Me Hard and Soft; the reporting does not present the album as a mental-health intervention.

A Yahoo Entertainment reproduction of the interview also reports that Eilish did not want to be treated as a spokesperson for depression. That distinction matters: her account can be meaningful without being treated as representative of every person’s experience. Yahoo Entertainment’s April 24, 2024 reproduction is supporting context for that point.
