They said they had lived there since 1979, raised their children and grandchildren there, and were heartbroken by the loss.
What Billy and Janice Crystal said about losing their home
In a joint statement reported by The Associated Press on January 8, 2025, the Crystals described the home as the setting for decades of family life. “Janice and I lived in our home since 1979. We raised our children and grandchildren here. Every inch of our house was filled with love. Beautiful memories that can’t be taken away. We are heartbroken of course but with the love of our children and friends we will get through this,” they wrote. The Associated Press report carries their statement.
They also expressed faith in the people around them: “The Pacific Palisades is a resilient community of amazing people and we know in time it will rise again. It is our home,” they wrote. CBS News also reported the couple’s response.
Why reports called it a home of 45 or 46 years
The couple said they had lived in the home since 1979. The Associated Press described it as their home of 45 years in its January 8, 2025 report; The Guardian called it their home of 46 years in a report published January 9. The descriptions reflect reports published on different days around the anniversary of their move-in year, rather than evidence of two different homes. The Guardian’s January 9 report used the 46-year framing.

The loss in the context of the Los Angeles fires
The Crystals’ home was lost in the Palisades Fire, which began on January 7, 2025, according to the Associated Press. In a 2026 retrospective, AP reported that the Palisades and Eaton fires together killed 31 people and destroyed about 13,000 homes and other residential properties. Those figures refer to the two fires combined, not to the Palisades Fire alone. AP also described more than three weeks of fire and about seven months of cleanup efforts across the two-fire disaster. How Crystal later drew on the family home
In 2026, AP reported that Crystal planned a Broadway one-man show titled 860, drawing on the family’s home and memories. The report said previews were planned for October 2026 and that the theater had not yet been announced at the time. Crystal described the planned show as “a joyous and heartfelt visit.” This was an announcement as reported by AP, not confirmation of a current performance schedule or ticket availability.
