Photographer Paul Rich told GeekWire that Gates ordered a cheeseburger, fries and a Coke; Gates later said he loves both Dick’s and Burgermaster.
When and where was Bill Gates photographed?
GeekWire reported on Jan. 16, 2019, that Rich took the photograph around 7 p.m. the previous Sunday at Dick’s Drive-In on Northeast 45th Street in Seattle’s Wallingford neighborhood. The date of the photograph was Jan. 13, 2019. GeekWire’s report identifies Rich as the photographer.
What did Gates order?
Rich told GeekWire that Gates ordered a cheeseburger, fries and a Coke. Rich said he was at the restaurant with his son to pick up dinner when he saw Gates. He described himself as “not terribly surprised” to see him there.
Why did the sighting attract attention?
The original report framed the photograph against Gates’s reported history with Burgermaster, another Seattle-area burger chain. It said Burgermaster had long been a favorite and connected that history to Microsoft’s first Seattle-area office being near a Burgermaster in Bellevue. That background explains the surprise framing; it does not establish that Gates had stopped liking Burgermaster.

What did Gates say about Dick’s and Burgermaster?
In a later GeekWire interview, Gates said he loves both restaurants, calling them his two “stark favorites.” When asked about his loyalty to the two, he answered, “I absolutely love both.” He also singled out Dick’s fries: “It’s hard to beat the Dick’s fries.” GeekWire’s interview records those comments.
SeattlePI’s account of a 2011 University of Washington appearance also quoted Gates discussing Dick’s prices: “But once you get much beyond that, I have to tell you, it’s the same hamburger. Dick’s has not raised their prices enough.” This is an earlier remark reported by SeattlePI, not a statement about the restaurant’s current prices. SeattlePI’s report provides that context.
