In Belair’s 2019 account, NXT coach Sarah Stock was the person who asked whether she could hit an opponent with it. A later Fightful report names a different coach, Sarah Amato, so the available accounts do not settle that attribution.
Ford encouraged Belair to keep the braid
Belair’s account separates the braid’s distinctive look from its use as an in-ring weapon. She said her husband, Montez Ford, urged her not to cut it because it helped her stand out. Belair then described Ford suggesting that she could use the braid in the ring. A separate Fightful report also credits Ford for the braid: Fightful’s report on Belair crediting Montez Ford.
Belair’s 2019 account names Sarah Stock as the coach who prompted the move
In an interview account transcribed in a 2019 Wrestling Inc. report, Belair said NXT coach Sarah Stock asked whether she could hit an opponent with her braid. Belair said that was the first time she tried it in the ring. The report credits the quoted material to Jim Varsallone of the Miami Herald, with an H/T to Wrestling Inc. Read the 2019 Wrestling Inc. account.
Her first named opponent was Ruby Riott
Belair said the first person she used the move on was Ruby Riott, in California, and recalled that it was the first time the braid made its distinctive noise. The account does not identify the event or give an exact date, so those details cannot be established from her statement.

A later report names Sarah Amato instead
A Fightful report about Belair’s development credits Performance Center trainer Sarah Amato with the idea to use her hair as a weapon: Fightful’s report naming Sarah Amato. That differs from the 2019 account, which names Sarah Stock. The available reporting does not establish whether the two coaches contributed at separate stages or whether the accounts differ about the same moment, so neither attribution should be treated as conclusively resolving the other.
