Brooklyn Rivera’s warning to Rubina Bernabe is the moment most likely meant by the phrase “the lie”: Rivera said Rubina was the house’s eviction target, but Cedric Hodges went home instead. Rivera later said she believed Rubina was going and chose to own that explanation rather than blame someone else. The interviews do not establish that she knowingly lied. Her cryptic remark about her husband’s “team” was a separate moment as she left the house.
What happened with Rubina and Cedric?
During the vote that evicted Cedric, Rivera warned Rubina that the house was voting her out. The vote flipped against the Pentagon-aligned players, and Cedric was evicted instead. The contrast between Rivera’s warning and the result is the likely basis for describing the moment as a lie. Parade’s August 24, 2024 interview and TV Insider’s August 23, 2024 recap report the vote and Rivera’s account.
How did Rivera explain her warning?
In her post-eviction interview with Parade’s Mike Bloom, Rivera said she had two choices after the vote: try to pin what happened on someone else or own her part. She said she chose to explain that, as she understood it at the time, the house was saying Rubina would go. She also said she did not know the Pentagon had been exposed when she gave Rubina that warning.
Rivera described her approach this way: “I had two choices. I could lie and try to pin it on someone else. But I felt in that moment that I had got to say it very matter of fact. So I chose to be honest, and I chose to kind of lean into the emotion and try to really sell like, ‘I had no reason to do it other than the house was saying you were going home.’” The quote is Rivera’s account of her thinking, not independent proof of what she knew or intended.

Was the husband “team” comment the lie?
There is another plausible source of the headline’s wording. As she left, Rivera told the housemates, “You guys will never know which team my husband plays for.” In a later GlobalTV interview, she said her husband is a Marine who works in sales and explained that housemates had speculated he was a baseball player. That remark was separate from her earlier warning to Rubina; the available interviews do not establish it as a deliberate lie either.
What happened during Rivera’s own eviction week?
The Rubina warning also should not be confused with Rivera’s later campaign to stay in the game. In the following eviction week, Rivera was nominated and campaigned against Tucker Des Lauriers. She said she suspected she would be evicted if she did not win the AI Arena, and used her eviction speech to encourage other players to target Tucker. Rivera left in twelfth place, according to Parade’s August 23, 2024 eviction report.

What can viewers conclude?
The clearest supported account is that Rivera warned Rubina she was the target, Cedric left instead, and Rivera later said she had believed Rubina was going home. Her husband’s team remark generated a different mystery. Because the interviews do not resolve which event the word “lie” refers to—or prove deliberate deception—it’s more accurate to call it a disputed or confusing moment than a confirmed lie.
