Bethesda has not shut down Skyblivion. The volunteer team behind the fan remake says Bethesda had no interest in ending the project, gave its developers game keys, and remained supportive after Oblivion Remastered launched. Skyblivion is still a separate PC mod for Skyrim Special Edition, with 2026 as its announced target—not a confirmed release date.
What Bethesda’s response means for Skyblivion
In an April 2025 public statement, the Skyblivion team said Bethesda had “absolutely no interest in shutting down Skyblivion” and had provided game keys to the modding team. The team described the official remaster as another way for players to experience Cyrodiil. Its FAQ later said Bethesda remained supportive after the remaster’s release and that the community’s response to the official game could help inform the fan project. Skyblivion’s FAQ and project updates
These are the team’s accounts of Bethesda’s position. They establish that development continued with reported support; they do not establish that Bethesda owns, funds, or formally approves every aspect of Skyblivion.
When is Skyblivion expected to release?
The project’s current published target is 2026. The FAQ does not give a quarter, so there is no more precise public release window to report. The project’s homepage lists a March 16, 2026 Mages Guild quest showcase, while its press page continues to identify 2026 as the target. A showcase is a development update, not a release announcement. Skyblivion press page

Why the team moved the target
On December 3, 2025, the team moved its anticipated release from 2025 into 2026, saying it needed more time to deliver a polished, stable, complete experience. Its update identified remaining work on Imperial City assets and interiors, navmesh across locations, quest implementation and debugging, and general polish, balance, and bug fixing. The same update said the world map was complete, all quest dungeons had been remade, and core 3D assets were essentially finished. Those are the team’s progress claims as of that announcement, not an independent audit or a guarantee that the remaining work will finish by a particular date.

Skyblivion and Oblivion Remastered are different projects
Oblivion Remastered is Bethesda’s official release. Bethesda says it set out to remaster the original rather than remake it: the game retains its core while updating art, animation, effects, and systems, and includes some new voice recordings alongside original voices. Bethesda described its aim as letting players see the original game “through today’s technology.” Bethesda’s remaster announcement
Skyblivion is a separate fan remake by the volunteer TESRenewal group, rebuilding Oblivion within Skyrim Special Edition. Its FAQ describes redesigned dungeons, Oblivion realms, and exterior worldspace. The intended initial release covers the base game; the team plans to work on Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles after release. Bethesda’s remaster product page, by contrast, lists those expansions among its included content. Oblivion Remastered product page

Skyblivion’s FAQ says the project does not plan to use newer voice lines or assets from the remaster because of legal restraints. It also says adapting Skyblivion to the remaster would require a substantial change in scope and be like starting over. These are the project’s stated plans and explanation, not a statement of Bethesda’s legal position.
What you need to play Skyblivion
According to the project FAQ, Skyblivion is planned for PC and requires both Skyrim Special Edition and Oblivion GOTY Deluxe. The FAQ says the games can come from a mixture of Steam and GOG, that the Skyrim Anniversary DLC is not required, and that installation is planned through a custom installer. It also says console versions will not be supported. Skyblivion FAQ

Bethesda announced a Physical Deluxe Edition of Oblivion Remastered for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X on October 13, 2025. Bethesda said the edition includes a disc granting access to the base game but still requires an additional download, and described the release as limited and sold through select regional stores.
