There is no soundhole pickup in the cited manufacturer documentation confirmed specifically for acoustic bass guitar. Fishman’s Rare Earth and Neo-D magnetic soundhole pickups are documented for acoustic guitar, and Fishman says its magnetic models need ferrous or steel-core strings to produce sound. Treat them as conditional candidates, not proven bass-compatible choices: verify your strings, soundhole dimensions, physical clearance and string balance before buying.
Are soundhole pickups made for acoustic bass guitar?
The cited Fishman product pages and guides describe guitar installations; they do not establish that a particular soundhole pickup is approved for acoustic bass. That distinction matters: a pickup may fit the opening yet fail to sense the strings correctly or interfere with playing. Fishman’s FAQ for Acoustic says its Neo-D, Rare Earth and Blackstack magnetic soundhole pickups require strings with a ferrous or steel core to produce sound.
So the practical answer is conditional. A magnetic guitar pickup may be worth investigating only if the bass’s exact string set has a compatible core and the pickup fits and aligns safely. The guitar specifications below are useful screening information, not evidence of tested acoustic-bass performance.

Check compatibility before ordering
1. Confirm the string core
Ask the string maker or seller whether the exact acoustic-bass set has a ferrous or steel core. Do not infer the core material from the outer winding alone. If the string construction is unknown or non-ferrous, the cited magnetic-pickup guidance does not support expecting it to work.
2. Measure the usable soundhole
Measure the opening where the pickup would sit, then compare it with the exact model’s current instructions. Fishman lists 3 5/8 in (92 mm) for the Rare Earth Humbucking. Neo-D documentation differs: its 2025 guide gives 3 5/8 in (9.2 cm), while the current product page gives 3 7/8 in (98.5 mm). Confirm the applicable figure with Fishman or the seller rather than assuming the smaller threshold is sufficient.

3. Check shape, clearance and playing space
A diameter alone does not establish that a pickup will fit. Check the opening’s shape, the pickup’s body and clip dimensions, and whether it clears the strings and top. Acoustic-guitar documentation does not establish clearance for a bass’s string spacing or string height, so inspect alignment across all strings and make sure the installation will not interfere with playing.
4. Decide whether active or passive suits your setup
The Rare Earth Humbucking is active, has a volume control and uses a battery; Fishman lists up to 240 hours of battery life for the model in its 2026 catalog. The Neo-D is passive and does not require a battery. Choose based on your preference for onboard controls and battery use, while keeping in mind that those features do not establish bass compatibility.

5. Consider noise and output expectations
Fishman describes the Neo-D Single Coil as susceptible to 50–60 Hz hum and the Neo-D Humbucking as a stacked humbucking design. These are manufacturer product descriptions, not independent tests of either model on acoustic bass. The cited sources do not establish bass-specific output level, frequency response, string balance or pole-piece spacing; those should be confirmed for your instrument and intended amplification setup.

If you cannot confirm compatible string cores or a reliable physical fit, look for a pickup system documented for your acoustic bass, potentially a piezoelectric or installed system. The cited sources do not establish a specific acoustic-bass alternative model, so verify any candidate with its manufacturer for your instrument and string set rather than relying on a generic product label.
