There is no single objective “best” political TV show: the right pick depends on whether you want idealistic White House drama, political satire, a cynical power struggle, coalition bargaining, or intelligence suspense. For policy-minded optimism, start with The West Wing; for comedy, choose Veep; for a perspective beyond US presidential politics, try Denmark’s Borgen.
Which political TV show should you watch?

Best political dramas and comedies, by viewing mood
The West Wing: idealistic White House drama
Aaron Sorkin’s The West Wing is a fictional serial drama set in the White House during the Democratic administration of President Josiah Bartlet. It ran from September 22, 1999, to May 14, 2006. Its episodes combine substantive issues with staff friction and the practical difficulties of pursuing political ideals. The Peabody Awards describes it as “The West Wing primarily a show about ideas, ideals and the perils of same.” That mix makes it a natural choice for viewers who want a government-staff ensemble with an optimistic center, rather than a documentary account of how the White House operates.
The Television Academy records 27 Emmy Awards for the series, including Outstanding Drama Series wins in four consecutive years, from 2000 through 2003. Those honors demonstrate industry recognition, not a universal verdict on the best political series. Television Academy: The West Wing; Peabody Awards: The West Wing.
#1 Best Overall
Veep: political satire and cringe comedy
For comedy, Veep follows fictional vice president Selina Meyer, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and her Washington staff. Its jokes draw on characters’ lack of self-awareness, awkward behavior, and political maneuvering. The scripted series concluded with its seventh season in 2019, so viewers can watch a complete story rather than waiting for another season.
The Television Academy reports 17 Emmy wins for Veep. Louis-Dreyfus won six Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series awards for her portrayal of Selina Meyer, a record noted by the Academy in 2017. Television Academy: Veep; Television Academy: Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s Emmy wins.
Rank #2
House of Cards: a cynical power struggle
House of Cards is the choice for viewers drawn to a darker political thriller built around manipulation, betrayal, and the pursuit of government power. The US series adapts a BBC series and focuses on political ambition rather than the ideal of public service. Its later story changed after Kevin Spacey’s departure: following sexual misconduct allegations, his character, Frank Underwood, was written out as dead, and Claire became central. Royal Television Society: House of Cards.
Borgen: Danish coalition politics
If you want politics outside the US presidential system, Borgen follows Birgitte Nyborg’s rise to Denmark’s top political post and her effort to maintain a fragile coalition. Its multi-party parliamentary setting makes government formation and coalition bargaining part of the central drama—not just background to one leader’s decisions. The Week: political TV shows.
Homeland: intelligence and national-security suspense
Homeland is better understood as a suspense series about intelligence than as a conventional government-office drama. Its premise brings together returning Marine Nicholas Brody and CIA officer Carrie Mathison, whose suspicions place the story in a national-security register. Choose it for intelligence-focused tension rather than policy debate or campaign satire. The Week: political TV shows.
The Americans: an espionage story with political context
The Americans is an additional option if you are open to politics-adjacent viewing. It is more directly an espionage drama than a series about elections or the day-to-day work of government. The Television Academy’s 2018 awards page lists it among the Outstanding Drama Series nominees and records wins for Matthew Rhys’s lead performance and for writing. Television Academy: 2018 Emmy nominees and winners.

How to choose between these political series
- For hopeful, issue-driven government drama: Start with The West Wing.
- For sharp comedy about political embarrassment: Pick Veep.
- For ruthless ambition and thriller plotting: Try House of Cards.
- For parliamentary government and coalition bargaining: Choose Borgen.
- For intelligence and national-security suspense: Watch Homeland; consider The Americans if espionage is the draw.
Think, too, about what you mean by political “realism.” These shows are scripted fiction, and heightened conflict or comedy is part of their design. A series can be engaging about political ideas without serving as a factual guide to government operations.
