Bill Cobbs, the veteran character actor who played Whitney Houston’s manager in The Bodyguard and a security guard in Night at the Museum, died at home in California on June 25, 2024. He was 90. His publicist confirmed his death; no cause was provided.
What Bill Cobbs did in the two films
The Bodyguard
In the 1992 film, Cobbs played the manager of Whitney Houston’s character. It was a supporting role in a story led by Houston and Kevin Costner, but it helped make Cobbs’s steady, familiar presence recognizable to a wide audience.
Night at the Museum
In the 2006 comedy, he played a security guard. Like many of his screen appearances, it was a supporting part rather than a starring role.
A career built across stage, film and television
From the Air Force to the stage
Born Wilbert Francisco Cobbs in Cleveland on June 16, 1934, he served eight years in the U.S. Air Force as a radar technician after high school. He later sold cars before beginning his acting career onstage in Cleveland in 1969. He moved to New York and joined the Negro Ensemble Company.
