Bill Burr called health-insurance executives “gangsters” while discussing the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on his podcast Anything Better? with co-host Paul Virzi. The remark was Burr’s criticism of the healthcare business—not an established fact about Thompson, and not an endorsement of the killing.
What Bill Burr said—and the podcast context
In a December 9, 2024 report, The Independent quoted Burr reacting to people describing Thompson as a good person. Burr said: “They’re gangsters, dude. And then one of them gets whacked or something, they’re like, ‘I was good, he was such a good guy.’” He then told Virzi, “It’s a dirty game, Paul — healthcare,” adding, “Dirty game.”
“Gangsters” was Burr’s characterization of people in the insurance business, made in the context of public reaction to Thompson’s death. The report supports those quoted words and identifies the podcast, but does not provide a verified recording timestamp.
Who Brian Thompson was and what happened
Thompson was CEO of UnitedHealthcare. The Associated Press reported that he was fatally shot in what it described as a targeted attack on a Midtown Manhattan sidewalk on December 4, 2024, as he walked to the company’s investor conference. AP said he had led the insurance business since 2021. Its December 4 report said UnitedHealthcare provided coverage to more than 49 million Americans at the time; that is a contemporaneous scale figure, not a current enrollment count. Burr’s criticism is separate from the killing
Burr’s condemnation of the healthcare business should not be conflated with approval of violence or a finding about Thompson’s character. CNN’s December 11, 2024 video description summarized Burr’s position as not condoning the shooting while arguing that frustration with the healthcare industry helped explain the suspected motive. That is CNN’s summary of the discussion, not a substitute for a complete recording of Burr’s remarks. CNN video description
What “delay, deny, defend” does—and does not—establish
AP reported that wording attributed to ammunition in the case echoed “delay, deny, defend,” a phrase used by critics of insurers and the title of a critical 2010 book. AP also said police had not officially commented on the wording or confirmed any connection to that phrase. The reported resemblance therefore is not a confirmed police finding about motive. UnitedHealth Group’s response
In a December 13, 2024 statement, UnitedHealth Group said the killer and his parents were not UnitedHealthcare members. The company also said it approves and pays about 90% of medical claims upon submission, and that around one-half of one percent of claims requiring further review are due to medical or clinical reasons. These are the company’s figures and definitions, not independent findings. UnitedHealth Group statement
The company’s response and Burr’s opinion are different kinds of claims: one is the company’s account of membership and claim handling; the other is a comedian’s criticism. Neither establishes that Thompson was a “gangster” or resolves the broader arguments about insurance practices.
