“Worldwide Handsome” is a nickname Jin says he came up with himself—and he treats it as a joke, not a serious claim or official title. The phrase caught on alongside viral moments that sent people searching for him, but it is only one part of his public story: Jin is a BTS member, a solo artist, a character creator, and a documented enthusiast of gaming, cooking, and tennis.
1. Jin says he coined “Worldwide Handsome” himself
At a December 10, 2017 press conference, Jin said, “I gave myself [the name] ‘worldwide handsome,’” according to Soompi’s report. That account documents his explanation and public use of the nickname; it does not establish the exact interview or date when he first came up with it.
2. He presents it as a joke, not a beauty verdict
Jin added at the press conference, “Even I find it a little embarrassing to say, but many people like it, although I’m not actually worldwide handsome.” In a 2021 interview excerpt published by Soompi, he likewise said, “Honestly, there are lots of people who are more handsome than I am.” The point is playful self-deprecation, not a claim of an objectively measurable title.
3. Humor is part of how he connects with people
A 2021 Vogue Korea interview excerpt described Jin as someone who often lightens a serious atmosphere with humor. In a 2024 interview with Vogue Japan, he put the appeal simply: “What makes me feel most like myself is when I make someone laugh.” These are his own interview reflections, not a universal assessment of his personality.
