Josh Brolin’s memoir, From Under the Truck, recounts a turbulent adolescence, early substance use, and a painful decision to stop drinking. Its most arresting stories include the disturbing memory behind the title and a brief encounter with Philip Seymour Hoffman. These are Brolin’s recollections as reported in coverage of the book—not independently verified accounts of every episode.

What is From Under the Truck about?

The U.S. edition of From Under the Truck: A Memoir was published by HarperCollins in November 2024. Publisher descriptions frame it as a nonlinear account of Brolin’s life, from growing up on a ranch in Paso Robles, California, with his mother, Jane Agee Brolin, to acting, relationships, addiction, love, and fatherhood. Brolin has said the book moves across time rather than following a straight chronology. HarperCollins’ book listing and Brolin’s official book site provide the book’s description and edition information.

A UK paperback listing gives a November 19, 2026 release date; that date is specific to that listing and edition, not the U.S. publication. See the publisher and edition details.

What are the biggest bombshells in Brolin’s memoir?

The disturbing memory behind the title

Variety reports that Brolin recounts watching his mother and her boyfriend take part in a 15-round drinking contest when he was a teenager. The boyfriend was later found collapsed under a truck. This is the reported origin story for the memoir’s title, as told in Brolin’s book; the episode should be understood as his recollection, not an independently verified incident. Variety’s account covers the story.

Substance use began when he was young

According to Variety’s reporting on the memoir, Brolin writes that he began smoking marijuana at nine and tried LSD at 13. He also describes later episodes involving jail, bar fights, and a stabbing in Costa Rica. The account traces a destructive period in his youth and adulthood, rather than presenting those incidents as isolated shock value. Variety reports these details from the memoir.

A brief encounter with Philip Seymour Hoffman

Variety says Brolin writes that he was hungover and using alcohol and drugs when he ran into Philip Seymour Hoffman in 1992; Hoffman was sober at the time. Brolin later learned Hoffman had returned to using, and Hoffman died of an overdose in 2014. The encounter is poignant in retrospect, but it was brief: nothing in the account supports suggesting that Brolin caused, could have predicted, or could have prevented Hoffman’s later death. Read Variety’s reporting.

The moment he decided to stop drinking

In a November 2024 Variety interview, Brolin said he had not had a drink for 11 years. He recalled arriving at his grandmother’s deathbed smelling of alcohol, an experience that led him to decide to quit. That statement describes what he told Variety at the time; it should not be read as a claim about his status today. The interview appears in Variety.

Barbra Streisand asked him directly about alcoholism

Kirkus reports Brolin’s account that his stepmother, Barbra Streisand, asked, “Aren’t you an alcoholic?” after he asked for wine. He said he valued her candor: “She didn’t challenge me, she was just honest.” In the memoir’s broader picture of addiction, the exchange stands out for its plainness. Kirkus covers the account.

Why does the memoir jump around in time?

The shifts in chronology are intentional. In an interview with Forbes, Brolin said, “I think the book started to dictate what it wanted to be.” He described setting milestones from different stages of his acting career—including The Goonies and No Country for Old Men—alongside each other across a long span of time. That structure lets the memoir connect family and personal history with the work, instead of treating a career timeline as the book’s organizing principle. Forbes’ interview with Brolin discusses the writing process.

What the revelations add up to

The book’s most striking disclosures are personal rather than a single hidden fact about Brolin’s career: a frightening family memory, early and sustained exposure to drugs and alcohol, and the effort to recognize when drinking had become destructive. The stories about Hoffman and Streisand add human context, while the nonlinear structure places them within a life that also includes acting, relationships, and fatherhood. These are the memoir’s reported themes and episodes, not a claim that every detail has been independently corroborated.
