Beyoncé’s “Daughter,” from her 2024 album Cowboy Carter, incorporates “Caro mio ben,” an Italian vocal work. The album credits, as reported by Pitchfork, call the use an interpolation—not a sample of Cecilia Bartoli’s recording. Beyoncé has also said she sampled composer Joseph Bologne for the song, a separate reference whose source work has not been identified in the available account.
What Italian song appears in “Daughter”?
The passage is identified as “Caro mio ben.” GRAMMY names Giuseppe Tommaso Giovanni Giordani as its composer and describes it as opera; ABC calls it an Italian art song. “Italian vocal work” is the clearest neutral description when the genre label matters, since the sources use different terminology.

ABC also describes the passage’s transition into “Spaghettii,” another track on Cowboy Carter. The shift connects a classical Italian vocal passage with the album’s broader range of musical references.
Is “Caro mio ben” a sample or an interpolation?
Pitchfork reported that Beyoncé’s official album credits list an interpolation of “Caro Mio Ben,” by Cecilia Bartoli. An interpolation refers to incorporating or re-creating musical material from an existing composition; a sample uses audio taken from an existing recording. The credit’s wording supports calling this an interpolation, but it does not establish that Beyoncé used audio from a Bartoli recording.

What is the Joseph Bologne reference?
In a GQ interview, Beyoncé separately said: “This is why it was so important for me to sample the composer Joseph Bologne, known as Chevalier de Saint-Georges, in the song ‘Daughter’ on Cowboy Carter.” Her statement identifies Joseph Bologne as a composer she sampled, but it does not name the specific work or passage. This reference should not be conflated with the credited interpolation of “Caro Mio Ben.”
