COWBOY CARTER won both Best Country Album and Album of the Year at the 2025 Grammy Awards. That is a striking act of recognition—but it does not prove the Grammys understand country music better than Nashville. The more useful question is what the awards recognized, and what one win can—and cannot—say about country’s longer history.
What Beyoncé won at the 2025 Grammys
At the 67th Annual Grammy Awards, COWBOY CARTER took home Best Country Album and Album of the Year. The ceremony honored recordings released from September 16, 2023, through August 30, 2024. In Best Country Album, the other nominees were F-1 Trillion by Post Malone, Deeper Well by Kacey Musgraves, Higher by Chris Stapleton, and Whirlwind by Lainey Wilson. The Academy’s full results list both wins.

The Best Country Album win was a historic milestone: the Recording Academy reported that Beyoncé became the first Black woman to win that category. The Album of the Year award was her first in that category. At the November 2024 nominations announcement, COWBOY CARTER had 11 nominations, while Beyoncé had 99 career nominations at that point—not a current career total. The Academy’s 2025 coverage records those milestones.
What the two Grammy awards actually measure
Best Country Album
The Recording Academy’s eligibility description requires an album to contain more than 75% playing time of new country recordings. That is a category rule, not a measurement of how much country the album contains in a broader cultural or critical sense. It also does not establish a rule for Nashville’s awards or industry institutions. See the Academy’s Best Country Album category for its eligibility description.

Album of the Year
Album of the Year is a general-field honor for overall achievement. The Academy evaluates performance, production, engineering and mixing, and songwriting, with arranging and musicianship also considered. Its 2025 listing credits Beyoncé, Terius “The-Dream” Gesteelde-Diamant, and Dave Hamelin as producers, along with the album’s engineers, mixers, songwriters, and mastering engineer.
These are distinct forms of recognition: one award places the album in a country-specific category, while the other honors achievement across albums more broadly. The result shows that Grammy voters recognized COWBOY CARTER in both frames; it does not show that the voters reached that judgment for the same reasons.
Who decides what the Grammys recognize?
The Recording Academy says Grammy winners are determined by its voting members, whom it describes as music creators, including artists, producers, songwriters, and engineers. That description identifies the electorate as the Academy presents it; it is not an independent assessment of voters’ knowledge of country music.

- Shrink-wrapped
At her Best Country Album acceptance speech, Beyoncé said, “Wow, I really was not expecting this,” according to the Recording Academy’s ceremony coverage. The moment captured the surprise and significance of the win, but an award speech and the award itself cannot tell us how every part of the country industry or listening public views the album.

Beyoncé’s Grammy milestone is not the beginning of Black participation in country music. The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s From Where I Stand: The Black Experience in Country Music documents ways Black Americans have created, contributed to, and been influenced by the genre. The project provides historical context for understanding Black contributions as part of country music’s longer story, not a recent arrival.
In 2024, the museum expanded the project’s box set with a fourth disc featuring a newer wave of artists through 2020. Its May 2, 2024 announcement describes the project as a response to a perceived gap in music history. The collection is a substantial institutional resource, not a claim to contain every Black country artist or contribution.

The Recording Academy also reported that Beyoncé dedicated her Album of the Year award to Linda Martell, connecting Martell’s story to the COWBOY CARTER project. The Academy identifies Martell as the first Black woman to play at the Grand Ole Opry. That is the Academy’s historical framing in its award coverage; the Grammy result itself does not settle the broader history of representation in country institutions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. So, do the Grammys “get” country more than Nashville?
The available facts do not support a verdict that the Grammys understand country better than Nashville. “Nashville” is not one decision-maker: the comparison might mean Nashville-centered award bodies, the commercial music industry, radio programmers, or listeners. Each would require its own evidence and a defined period of comparison.
A fair comparison would examine what each institution counts as country, who makes its decisions, which artists receive nominations and wins, and how access and visibility work across radio, touring, and recording. It would also ask how institutions acknowledge the genre’s history. The Grammy wins answer one part of that inquiry: Academy voters awarded COWBOY CARTER the country-album prize and the top album honor in 2025. They do not, on their own, establish how Nashville’s institutions or audiences assessed the album, or which system has the stronger record of recognizing country music.
