You can start making beats with a computer and a digital audio workstation (DAW); a full studio is not required. Add other gear only when it solves a specific need: a MIDI controller for hands-on input, an audio interface for recording external sources, headphones for monitoring, or standalone hardware for a self-contained workflow.

What equipment do you need to make beats?

For a computer-based setup, the essentials are a computer that can run your chosen DAW and the DAW itself. A DAW is the software where you record, edit, arrange and produce audio. It can also let you enter MIDI notes, play software instruments and apply effects, so you can make beats without buying a keyboard or other controller. Focusrite describes the DAW as the central production workspace in its DAW overview.

Choose a DAW based on its workflow, operating-system compatibility, included instruments and samples, and cost. Focusrite names Ableton Live, FL Studio, GarageBand and Logic Pro, Pro Tools, and Cubase among popular options; that is a list, not a ranking. Ableton’s Live setup resources also cover interfaces, MIDI connections, sounds and samples, and computer performance.

If you are still learning, you can begin before buying gear: Ableton’s browser-based Learning Music lessons require no experience or equipment.

How powerful does your computer need to be?

Requirements vary by DAW version and by the size of your projects and sample libraries. Check the software maker’s current requirements before buying a computer. As a concrete, version-specific example, Ableton’s Live 12 requirements page lists 8 GB of RAM for both supported macOS and Windows configurations. Its separate computer guide recommends 16 GB or higher for typical music production, along with a modern multi-core CPU and SSD storage; larger projects and sample libraries can need more memory. These are Ableton’s stated requirements and recommendations, not universal specifications for every DAW.

  • Check compatibility: Confirm that the operating system and processor meet the requirements for the exact DAW release you plan to use.
  • Consider workload: More tracks, effects and sample-heavy projects place greater demands on the computer than a small arrangement.
  • Leave room to grow: If your budget allows, additional RAM and SSD storage can make larger projects more practical.

See Ableton’s Live system requirements and computer specifications guide for its version-specific details.

Do you need a MIDI keyboard to make beats?

No. A MIDI controller is optional: it sends note or control data to software, giving you a more tactile way to play instruments or operate your DAW. You can enter and edit notes directly in the software instead. A controller is worth considering if playing keys or tapping pads feels more natural than drawing notes on screen.

When choosing one, consider the number of keys, whether you want pads or knobs, its size, how it connects to your computer, and how well it maps to your DAW. A USB MIDI keyboard controller is a common starting category, but more controls do not automatically make a beat better.

When is an audio interface useful?

An audio interface is most useful when you want to connect a microphone, an instrument, or another external audio source to your computer. It can provide suitable inputs and outputs, and Ableton notes that an external interface can improve sound quality and reduce latency. If your workflow uses only software instruments and samples, you may not need to buy one immediately.

Choose by the number and type of sources you need to record at the same time, operating-system and driver support, output connections, headphone monitoring, and latency needs. For example, recording a microphone and instrument simultaneously calls for enough appropriate inputs; a single source requires less. Check your computer’s ports and the interface’s current compatibility before purchase.

Buffer size and latency

Buffer size is a trade-off: lower settings reduce the delay you hear while playing or recording, but raise CPU load. Ableton’s audio-interface setup guide presents 256 or 512 samples as a compromise, not a universal setting. If audio crackles or the system struggles, a higher buffer may help; when latency is disruptive, try a lower setting if the computer can handle it. On Windows, Ableton’s guide recommends ASIO for Live. Follow the current instructions for your DAW, interface and operating system.

What should you use to monitor your beats?

Headphones are a practical way to listen while making beats, especially in a shared or space-conscious setup. They are also useful when recording a microphone: Ableton advises headphones to reduce the chance of feedback. You can add studio monitors if your room and listening setup suit them, but this guide does not establish that monitors are more accurate for every room or specify acoustic-treatment needs. Ableton’s interface guide covers headphones and powered monitors as output options.

Can you make beats with standalone hardware?

Yes. Standalone devices offer a different, more hands-on workflow and may combine sequencing, sampling, audio connections and built-in controls. They are an alternative to a computer-centered setup, not a prerequisite. Before choosing one, consider portability, how you will sample or record audio, built-in monitoring, and whether it integrates with the DAW you might use.

Ableton Move and Push 3 illustrate different combinations of these features; they are examples, not a comparison of the full market. The Move manual documents a built-in speaker, microphone/audio input, headphone/audio output, USB-C audio-interface use with Live, and USB-A MIDI connectivity. The Push 3 manual documents a built-in audio interface, headphone and monitor connections, and two balanced inputs. Those specific features apply to those devices, not to every standalone instrument or controller.

A sensible order for building a setup

  1. Start with the computer and DAW. Verify software compatibility and make a first beat using the instruments and samples available in the software.
  2. Add headphones if you need a dedicated listening setup. They are useful for focused monitoring and microphone recording.
  3. Get a MIDI controller if hands-on playing or control would improve your workflow. It is an input option, not a requirement.
  4. Add an audio interface when you need to record external sources or want its input and output options. Match its connections to the sources you actually plan to use.
  5. Choose standalone hardware only if its self-contained workflow suits you. Compare its sampling, monitoring, portability and DAW-integration features against your needs.

Buy to address a real bottleneck rather than to fill out a studio checklist. A computer and DAW can get you started; each additional piece of equipment should make a particular part of making, recording or hearing your beats easier.
