Spoilers for the Season 2 finale, “Cold Harbor.” Ben Stiller said the finale’s defining image was innie Mark looking between Gemma and Helly. At the last threshold, Mark turns away from the exit with Gemma and runs with Helly. Stiller described that as a deliberate choice—not a cliffhanger designed simply to leave viewers without an answer.
What happens at the end of “Cold Harbor”?
Innie Mark helps carry out a plan to rescue Gemma, whom the innies know as Ms. Casey. Completing the Cold Harbor file is part of that plan. After Mark transitions to his outie and reaches Gemma, getting her out requires him to return to the severed floor.

At the final threshold, innie Mark leads Gemma toward the hallway exit, then turns back toward Helly. The two run down the corridor as alarms sound, and the episode ends on a freeze-frame. The immediate decision is clear: Mark does not leave with Gemma; he chooses to stay with Helly.
What did Ben Stiller confirm about the choice?
Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, Stiller, an executive producer and director, said: “That image, to me, was always there in my head of Mark in the hallway, looking between Gemma and Helly.” He described the image as a guiding idea for the finale, not a last-minute ambiguity meant to obscure what Mark does.

Stiller connected the moment’s weight to the season’s development of Mark and Helly’s relationship, alongside the episode-seven flashback that gave viewers more context for Gemma. The choice brings those relationships into direct conflict at the moment Mark has to act.
Why does Mark choose Helly over Gemma?
The episode shows Mark’s action, but the meaning can be read through the two lives and relationships that shape his identity. Series creator Dan Erickson offered that interpretation to TheWrap, saying the decision is “not even because it’s a choice between these two women,” but because each relationship defines Mark’s identity. Erickson described innie Mark as “choosing his life over this life that he’s always felt beholden to, which is his outie’s.”

That is Erickson’s framing of the decision, rather than a claim that the finale explains every motive Mark has or settles the consequences. The visible fact is that innie Mark turns back toward Helly; the identity-based interpretation helps explain why the turn matters beyond a simple romantic choice.
Was the finale meant to be a cliffhanger?
Stiller said the creative team wanted Season 2’s ending to differ from Season 1’s cliffhanger. As he put it, “we wanted this finale to be different and not leave people with a cliffhanger just to leave them with a cliffhanger.” The finale resolves the immediate question of whom Mark goes with: he runs with Helly.

It does not resolve what happens to Mark, Helly, or Gemma after the freeze-frame. They remain in a dangerous and uncertain situation, so the characters’ future is open even though Mark’s choice in that moment is not.
