But its crowded, loose story takes time to bring its title character forward and adds little that makes a sequel feel essential. It’s a stronger pick for viewers seeking Burton-flavored silliness than for anyone hoping the 1988 original’s world will be meaningfully reimagined.
What is Beetlejuice Beetlejuice about?
After an unexpected family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return to Winter River. Lydia’s teenage daughter, Astrid, discovers the mysterious town model in the attic, opening a portal to the Afterlife. When Beetlejuice’s name is said three times, the demon returns to unleash chaos. That is the setup in Warner Bros.’ official synopsis.
Tim Burton directs from a screenplay by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, based on a story by Gough, Millar and Seth Grahame-Smith. Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara return as Beetlejuice, Lydia Deetz and Delia Deetz. Jenna Ortega joins as Astrid, alongside newcomers Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci and Willem Dafoe. The film runs 1 hour 45 minutes and is rated PG-13, according to Metacritic.
Do the performances and comedy make it worth watching?
Keaton’s return is the central attraction: his mischievous, unruly presence gives the movie its most immediate connection to the original. The returning Deetz performers help the family story feel lived-in, while Ortega’s Astrid provides a new generation’s route into Winter River and its supernatural trouble. The ensemble is part of the fun, though the large cast and several intersecting plot threads can make the film feel crowded rather than focused.

The visual gags and ghoulish afterlife imagery offer the sequel’s other strong reason to watch. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus praises Keaton, practical effects and gags, while its audience summary describes the film as mostly fun and highlights the performances; these are aggregator summaries, not a guarantee of how every viewer will respond (Rotten Tomatoes).
For TIME, Stephanie Zacharek argued that the low-stakes silliness is part of the point: “Instead, Burton has just allowed himself to be silly and have fun; Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is filled with low-stakes wisecracks and kindergarten-style one-liners, but the effect works.” Her August 28, 2024 review also praises the film’s “creepy-elegant-funny” set pieces and old-school Burton imagery, while noting that it takes a while for Beetlejuice to arrive (TIME).

Does the sequel’s story justify revisiting the original?
The hesitation is not that the film lacks amusing moments; it is that its story can feel like a framework for them rather than a tightly shaped reason to return. The plot is loose and busy, and the title character’s delayed arrival can leave viewers waiting for the movie’s defining source of mischief to take center stage.
That criticism appears in the range of reactions collected by Metacritic. Screen Daily’s Jonathan Romney describes the film as comfort food for longtime Burton fans and questions its freshness or substance. ScreenCrush’s Matt Singer says the story takes too long to emerge and Keaton to take center stage. Vanity Fair’s Richard Lawson finds the humor limp and calls the film a waste of its cast. Those are individual critics’ judgments, not a universal verdict.

The sequel’s dependence on recognition is both part of its appeal and its limitation. Familiar faces, settings and macabre comedy make the return comfortable for fans; they do not necessarily make the world feel substantially expanded. TIME’s favorable reading—that the ride matters more than plot mechanics—helps explain why the film can work as playful entertainment even for a viewer who sees little narrative need for it.
Who should watch Beetlejuice Beetlejuice?
- Watch it if you want Keaton’s unruly demon, Burton-style gothic imagery and a playful return to the Deetz family.
- Temper your expectations if you like the original but want a tightly constructed plot or a sequel that gives its afterlife mythology a substantial new direction.
- Skip it for now if nostalgia alone is not enough to carry a crowded story whose charms are more about performances and set pieces than narrative momentum.
