There is no single best sci-fi series for every viewer. For an April 2026 watchlist, choose by the experience you want: space adventure, speculative ideas, dystopia, time-bending mystery, or science-fiction horror—and by whether you want a continuing drama, a finished story, a limited series, or an anthology.
This guide treats science fiction broadly when a story’s speculative premise is central, including some post-apocalyptic and horror-leaning shows. Fantasy and superhero series are not included just because they share an audience with sci-fi; genre boundaries are editorial choices, and Rotten Tomatoes says it treated superhero shows as a separate category in its all-time guide. Its selection method combined Tomatometer data, other reputable best-of lists, editorial judgment, longevity, influence, and spin-offs, but that guide was updated in 2020—not a current April 2026 ranking. How to choose a sci-fi show
Start with the viewing experience rather than a numbered ranking. A show that works as a short, self-contained story may suit a different evening than a multi-season drama, while an anthology lets you sample different premises and tones without following one continuous plot.
- Premise: Decide whether you want space exploration, speculative science, dystopia, alternate realities, or science-fiction horror.
- Format: Check whether the series is ongoing, complete, limited, or an anthology; that determines both the commitment and whether the story has a known endpoint.
- Tone: Look for the balance you want—serious, suspenseful, darkly comic, or lighter adventure.
- Maturity: Check the rating in your region and on the service where you plan to watch; ratings and available versions can vary.
- Availability: Streaming catalogs depend on territory and date. Confirm the current listing in your country before starting; a platform filter or older guide is not a guarantee of availability.
Recommendations by the kind of sci-fi you want
For a character-centered space adventure: Lost in Space
Choose this if you want the scale and spectacle of space adventure anchored by relationships. Netflix Tudum describes it as a character-centered space adventure, a useful distinction for viewers who prefer a family-focused journey over a more abstract or purely technical take on science fiction. For short stories and changing styles: Love, Death & Robots
An animated anthology is a good fit when you want variety rather than one long plot. Netflix Tudum describes Love, Death & Robots as short stories with varied styles and tones, so individual episodes can offer very different sci-fi moods. Check episode ratings and content notes if you are choosing for a particular age group or sensitivity.
For a large-scale cosmic story: 3 Body Problem
Consider this if you want science fiction whose conflicts expand in scale. Space.com’s 2026 guide reports that the show’s co-creators said of season two, “The tone really changes once you get to the second season. It’s much bigger. Things get wilder, the conflicts get more cosmic.” That is a useful expectation for the direction of the later season, not a claim that every viewer will prefer it. How critic lists and scores can help
Rankings are useful discovery tools, not a universal verdict. Metacritic’s sci-fi browse page presents critic scores and excludes titles with fewer than seven critic reviews; that threshold is an inclusion rule, not a measure of popularity or quality. Rotten Tomatoes’ all-time guide uses a different mix of review data, lists, editorial discretion, longevity, influence, and spin-offs. The two approaches should not be blended into one score or treated as an April 2026 consensus.
Rotten Tomatoes also has a dynamic “streaming now” browse page with service filters and changing critic and audience percentages. Those listings and scores are snapshots, not fixed facts. Where to watch: check your region before you press play
Streaming availability changes by service, territory, and date. The cited platform-filtered pages can help surface titles, but neither an old recommendation guide nor a browse filter guarantees that a show is currently included in a subscription where you live. Search the title in the service’s own catalog immediately before watching, and distinguish subscription access from rental or purchase options.
A later update is separate from the April 2026 snapshot: Space.com’s guide to upcoming space and sci-fi shows was last updated July 22, 2026, and includes later 2026 context. Its dates, plans, and service associations can move, so it should not be backdated to describe the April lineup.

Find the right next show
If you want an accessible space journey, start with the character-centered approach of Lost in Space. If you prefer a sampler of self-contained stories, try Love, Death & Robots. If you want a cosmic-scale drama, consider 3 Body Problem with the later-season tonal shift in mind. Then check the format, rating, and current regional availability before committing.
