There is no single agreed ranking of the best reggaeton songs. This cross-era starter list instead favors historical significance, range across artists and sounds, and usefulness to someone exploring the genre. It treats “Gasolina” as a major milestone—not reggaeton’s sole origin—and makes room for the underground history and women’s contributions that a list of familiar crossover hits can miss.

Why there is no definitive list

“Best” depends on what a listener values: historical influence, dance-floor familiarity, crossover reach, or a particular era and sound. The available historical accounts establish key moments and artists, but they do not establish a consensus ranking or a comprehensive current chart. The selections here are therefore a listening route, not a numbered countdown.

For context, GRAMMY.com’s overview describes Puerto Rican reggaeton’s underground growth in the mid-1990s through DJ mixtapes drawing on hip-hop techniques and dancehall riddims. That account names artists including Daddy Yankee and Ivy Queen. It is a useful starting point, not a claim that the genre has only one scene or influence.

Start with “Gasolina”—as a milestone, not an origin story

Daddy Yankee’s “Gasolina” is a strong first stop for hearing how reggaeton reached a much broader U.S. audience. The Library of Congress account places the song in that breakthrough and notes its cultural significance; it was added to the National Recording Registry in 2023. Spotify’s 2021 announcement about its LOUD podcast also identifies “Gasolina” as a watershed moment. Those sources support calling it a major anchor, not the beginning and entirety of reggaeton’s history.

Listening to it as a landmark is more illuminating than treating it as a complete definition of the genre. Set it alongside earlier underground history, other influential performers, and later generations to hear how reggaeton’s sound and reach changed.

Make room for women and newer Puerto Rican voices

A starter list should not reduce reggaeton to its best-known male crossover stars. Ivy Queen belongs in the historical frame: GRAMMY.com includes her in its account of the genre’s story. More recent coverage from the Associated Press discusses changing representation in urbano music and points to newer Puerto Rican voices including Young Miko and RaiNao.

These references make the case for broadening the listening route, but they do not by themselves verify a complete track list for each artist or establish a comparative ranking. Treat artist names as directions for further listening, and check the specific recording and its classification when assembling a playlist.

A practical way to explore the genre

  1. Hear the milestone. Begin with Daddy Yankee’s “Gasolina” to encounter a song often used to explain reggaeton’s U.S. mainstream breakthrough.
  2. Look back to the underground context. Explore the artists and history in GRAMMY.com’s overview, which describes the mid-1990s mixtape culture and its musical influences.
  3. Include women’s contributions. Follow the historical thread through Ivy Queen rather than treating her as an optional add-on.
  4. Listen beyond the breakthrough era. Use the AP’s discussion of Young Miko and RaiNao as a way into newer Puerto Rican voices, while recognizing that the article is not a song-by-song ranking.
  5. Choose a listening path, not a popularity contest. Spotify’s Baila Reggaeton playlist and LOUD podcast are discovery options; check their current availability in your region. Spotify reported that Baila Reggaeton reached 10 million followers in 2020, seven years after its creation. That is a dated figure for one Spotify playlist, not a current measure of reggaeton’s total audience.

How to judge a “best reggaeton songs” list

Before relying on any list, ask what “best” means in that context. A historical selection should explain the influence or milestone behind its choices; a playlist for a new listener should offer variety in sound, era, and perspective. Popularity claims need a named platform, date, and measure. Spotify’s 2020 playlist milestone, for example, cannot establish which songs are currently most popular across the genre.

Spotify Newsroom described the three parts of LOUD as “essentially created by watershed moments in reggaeton’s history that most people would describe as ‘genre defining.’” That is Spotify’s editorial framing for its podcast, rather than an independent scholarly definition. It nevertheless illustrates a useful approach: organize listening around meaningful changes in the genre, instead of presenting an unsupported universal ranking.
