Mikey Madison won the 2025 Academy Award for Best Actress for Anora; Demi Moore was nominated for The Substance. The Academy confirms the result, but its public records do not disclose the vote count or explain voters’ choices. The clearest explanation is therefore a set of factors that shaped the race—not a claim about what any individual voter thought.
What the Academy decided—and what it did not explain
At the 97th Academy Awards on March 2, 2025, Madison won Actress in a Leading Role for Anora, while Moore was among the nominees for The Substance. The Academy’s official ceremony record establishes the result, not its cause. The Academy’s public voting information describes the voting process and points to category rules; it does not publish individual ballots, a Best Actress tally, or members’ reasoning.
That distinction matters: the six points below help explain the result’s context, but none can be presented as a proven motive or decisive cause.
Six factors that put Madison’s win in context
1. Madison’s role was the story’s center
In Anora, Madison plays the title character, and director-writer Sean Baker wrote the role for her, according to the Associated Press’s March 3, 2025 report. That makes her performance closely bound to the film’s central story. It is a meaningful point of comparison with Moore’s work in The Substance, but it does not establish how Academy voters weighed either performance.

2. She prepared for specific physical and linguistic demands
The AP reported that Madison studied Russian, learned to pole dance, and performed her own stunts for the role. These are concrete elements of her preparation, not evidence that voters rewarded effort over the finished performance.
3. Anora had broad Academy support
Anora won Best Picture and directing honors at the ceremony, and the AP reported that it collected five Oscars overall. Madison’s win came within a strong film-level result. That context may help explain the award landscape, but there is no evidence here of a formal vote-transfer effect or a rule that favored a film’s lead performer.

4. The awards-season picture changed late
Moore had beaten Madison at both the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild Awards. Madison then won the BAFTA two days before Oscar voting ended and also won the Independent Spirit Award, according to the AP. Those results show why the race could look different by the final stretch; they do not show that BAFTA caused the Oscar outcome.
5. Anora brought momentum from Cannes
The AP noted that Anora won the Palme d’Or at Cannes and described the film as gaining momentum during awards season. Cannes recognition and later awards kept the film in the conversation, but the available reporting does not identify these factors as individual voters’ reasons for choosing Madison.

6. A frontrunner narrative is not the ballot result
Moore’s prominent precursor wins made her a visible contender, but precursor awards are not the Academy’s vote. The official result names Madison as the winner. The divergence is a reminder that public predictions and earlier ceremonies describe the race’s visible story, not the private preferences recorded on Oscar ballots.

The performances belong to films with different genres and storytelling approaches: Anora is built around its title character, while The Substance offers Moore a distinct leading role in a different kind of film. A comparison can consider role demands, physical and linguistic preparation, each character’s place in the story, and tonal range. The cited reporting establishes Madison’s documented preparation and the films’ awards context; it does not provide a critical ranking that proves one performance was objectively better.

Madison’s acceptance speech also acknowledged the sex worker community: “I want to again recognize the sex worker community. I will continue to support and be an ally,” the AP reported. That is Madison’s statement about the community, not an explanation of the Academy’s vote.
