But “one condition” is headline shorthand: the available reports do not establish that Mendelsohn made a formal contractual demand or that his return depended on a specific change.
What did Mendelsohn ask Gilroy to change?
A report by Guia Disney+ Brasil, describing Mendelsohn’s appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, says he wanted Krennic’s presence or intensity turned up. The report gives his request in Portuguese as “Vamos aumentar um pouco o volume,” translated there as “Let’s turn up the volume a little.” That is the secondary report’s wording and translation, not a verified English transcript. The article frames the request against Mendelsohn’s view of Krennic in Rogue One as something of a “middle manager.” Guia Disney+ Brasil
How did he agree to return?
In a Variety interview, Mendelsohn recalled Gilroy asking whether he would be amenable to coming back for a few scenes. Mendelsohn says he answered, “Fuck yeah, absolutely.” He also said Krennic and his experience with Star Wars had been good for him, and that the opportunity took him by surprise with how good it was. His recollection describes an enthusiastic acceptance; it does not establish that the “turn up the volume” request was a deal-breaker or binding condition. Variety
Why Krennic feels different in Andor
The contrast is partly about where Krennic stands in his career. Mendelsohn told Variety that in Rogue One, Krennic is at the pinnacle of his achievement while other Imperial officials eye his department. In Andor, he is earlier in his ascent and more animated. That earlier point in his career gives the character room to project ambition and authority differently from the embattled figure seen later.
