Yes. Before she won an Academy Award, Renée Zellweger appeared in Richard Linklater’s 1993 film Dazed and Confused in a very small role. Linklater later described her as a “featured extra”; Zellweger called herself a “glorified extra.”
Which classic movie was Zellweger in?
It was Dazed and Confused, Linklater’s film about high-school students on the last day of school and one night in 1976. Focus Features lists its release date as September 24, 1993. Focus Features’ film page provides the studio’s description and a home-viewing route.
Was she an extra or a character?
Linklater’s specific description was “featured extra.” A 1996 Los Angeles Times profile characterized the part as virtually nonspeaking and said Zellweger took it because she wanted to work with Linklater. That makes it an early screen appearance, not a substantial speaking role.
Zellweger later recalled the experience warmly: “I felt really lucky to be a glorified extra on that movie,” she told RTÉ. RTÉ’s 2011 report quotes her description.

How did Parker Posey figure into the casting?
In a 20th-anniversary interview, Linklater said Zellweger arrived late in casting and was considered for a larger part alongside Parker Posey. The production chose Posey. Linklater’s account was: “She’s technically a featured extra, and we met her really late and had cast most of the movie, and it was between her and Parker Posey for that part. We went with Parker, but [Renée] would’ve been good.” The Daily Beast interview records his recollection.
Zellweger therefore did not play Posey’s role; she remained in the film in the smaller featured-extra part.

How did the appearance fit her career?
Dazed and Confused came early in Zellweger’s on-screen career. The 1996 Los Angeles Times profile places it before Love and a .45 and Jerry Maguire. She later won the Oscar for her role in Cold Mountain; The Guardian’s 2016 career profile recounts that win alongside her earlier film work.
