The recurring criticism of Avatar: Fire and Ash is that its story feels familiar, especially beside Avatar: The Way of Water. That is not the same as saying every critic disliked the film or that it repeats every scene: reviewers also praise its visual achievement and action, while their complaints about pacing, characters and narrative impact differ.
Is Fire and Ash a repeat of The Way of Water?
Several reviews describe a sense of déjà vu in the plot. Rotten Tomatoes’ first-reviews roundup characterized the story as familiar, while TheWrap and the Los Angeles Times faulted repetition or recycled plot construction. The comparison is specifically with The Way of Water; the criticism is about recognizable story beats, not a claim that the new film literally reuses every scene. Rotten Tomatoes’ roundup and reviews highlighted by Metacritic reflect this early critical response.
Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus, as reproduced in its review material, puts the contrast succinctly: “The third installment of James Cameron’s saga tells a familiar story, but its visual achievements are astounding, and it’s infused with plenty of glorious action.” That formulation captures a recurring theme, not a unanimous verdict.
What do critics praise?
The complaint about narrative familiarity does not mean reviewers think the film lacks spectacle. Visual effects, action and the immersive world remain prominent strengths in the roundup and in the Associated Press review. AP film reviewer Jake Coyle writes: “The ‘Avatar’ films, with their visual-effects wizardry and clunky revisionist Western storytelling, have always felt, most of all, like an immersion in a dream of James Cameron’s.” His description combines admiration for the visual experience with a reservation about the storytelling; it is one critic’s view, not a neutral consensus.

What are the other complaints?
Beyond the familiar plot, reviews raise different concerns rather than repeating one identical objection. TheWrap reviewer William Bibbiani focuses on slow stretches, character journeys and the effect of the storytelling:
“When the movie slows down — and boy, does it often slow down — the context gets in the way, because the plot is silly, the characters are on slow-moving journeys, and everything James Cameron is trying to say gets canceled out by the way he’s saying it.”

Metacritic’s review excerpts also include criticism of unfocused storytelling and thin characters. Other responses praise Cameron’s storytelling and the franchise, so the criticism is not unanimous. The film is listed at 3 hours 12 minutes by Rotten Tomatoes, a substantial runtime that helps explain why pacing is part of the discussion, though reviewers do not all make the same case about it. Rotten Tomatoes lists the runtime.

The reviews and roundup discussed here date to the film’s December 2025 theatrical release. They support a summary of the early critical response, not a live 2026 score or review tally. Aggregator figures can change, and no single score is needed to understand the central contrast: some critics find the narrative familiar or uneven, while the craft, action and visual world continue to draw praise.
