This guide groups memorable films about being stranded on a deserted island by tone and premise—not by an objective ranking—and includes a few broader island stories that are not straightforward survival dramas.

Best deserted-island movies for solo survival
Cast Away (2000): a modern solitary castaway drama
When a plane crash leaves FedEx systems engineer Chuck Noland isolated on a remote island, the story turns on one person facing separation and survival. Tom Hanks and Helen Hunt star, and Robert Zemeckis directed the film, according to Amblin. It is a natural starting point if you want the deserted-island premise focused on a single castaway rather than a group.
Robinson Crusoe: the classic castaway premise
This adaptation of Daniel Defoe’s novel follows the sole survivor of a shipwreck as he tries to build a solitary life on a deserted tropical island. Miramax’s film page identifies its connection to Defoe’s book. It pairs well with Cast Away if you want to compare a modern survival drama with a literary version of the castaway story.
Best deserted-island movie for a family adventure
Swiss Family Robinson (1960): ingenuity, a treehouse, and pirates
Shipwrecked together, the Robinson family uses salvaged materials to make a home in a large tree, grows food, and defends itself from pirates. D23 dates the film to December 21, 1960, credits Ken Annakin as director, and identifies Johann Wyss’s book as its source. See D23’s film entry for those details. Choose it for an ensemble family adventure rather than a grim, solitary survival drama.

Deserted-island movies about romance and growing up
The Blue Lagoon (1980): a coming-of-age romance
After a shipwreck brings two children and a ship’s cook to a tropical island, the children grow up there following the cook’s death. Sony identifies the film as an adaptation of Henry De Vere Stacpoole’s 1903 novel and rates it R. Its romance and coming-of-age focus makes it a different sort of island movie from a family adventure. Sony’s film page lists digital and DVD access; it does not establish a particular current subscription service or availability in every country.
Return to the Blue Lagoon (1991): a romantic sequel
This sequel follows two children left on an island as they grow up. Sony rates it PG-13. It is a fit if you want another romance-led island story, rather than a film centered on practical survival. The studio page lists digital and iTunes access, but current retailer and regional availability can vary. Details are on Sony’s film page.

Blue Lagoon: The Awakening (2012): a contemporary teen premise
In this retelling, two teenagers become stranded on an island during a Caribbean field trip and must manage without parents or phones, according to Sony’s synopsis. Consider it for a teen romance and survival blend with a contemporary setup.
Best deserted-island movie for action and escape
Six Days, Seven Nights: a stranded-pair adventure
A storm forces two leads down on a deserted island, where danger, romance, pirates, and attempts to escape drive the adventure. That mix makes it a lighter action-adventure option if you want more than one person’s struggle to endure isolation. D23’s synopsis is available on its film entry.
When the island is a theme, not just a survival setting
Lord of the Flies: an island story with a social lens
Lord of the Flies belongs on a broader island-movie list, but it is better framed as social allegory than as straightforward survival drama. The British Film Institute places it within the tradition of island cinema; its overview does not provide a film-specific synopsis here, so the recommendation is about the type of island story, not a version-specific plot guide. See the BFI’s “10 great island films”.
Broader island cinema
Not every memorable island film is about being stranded. The BFI’s list ranges across castaways, prisons, mystery, hedonism, isolated communities, and even lonely outposts that are not islands. Its observation that “The idea of being stranded away from civilisation has never lost its appeal” captures why the setting can support more than survival plots. Use its island-film guide to explore beyond literal deserted-island stories.
