If you want anime about drifting and Japanese street racing, start with Initial D. If you want a connected follow-up built around a near-future public-road championship and high-performance cars, try MF Ghost. “Best” depends on the kind of racing you want: no authoritative ranking establishes one series as the best for every viewer.
How to choose a car-racing anime
Use four questions to narrow the choice: where the racing happens, what the driving emphasizes, whether the story connects to another series, and the tone or visual style you want. The official descriptions available for Initial D and MF Ghost make them the clearest starting points for street-racing fans.
- Setting: Do you want street racing or a public-road competition?
- Driving focus: Are drifting and driver development more appealing, or do you want a larger competition built around striking cars?
- Continuity: Would you rather begin with a series on its own, or follow a successor to another franchise?
- Style: Compare official trailers or sample episodes to decide which presentation suits you; the official descriptions cited here do not establish a definitive style ranking.
Initial D: the place to start for drifting and street racing
Initial D follows Takumi, whose father’s tofu business has him making deliveries in an AE86. Kodansha describes the story as centered on Japan’s street-racing world, with drifting techniques at its core, and presents Takumi and his car as having untapped potential. That makes it the strongest sourced recommendation for viewers drawn to mountain-road racing, drifting, and a driver-centered story. Kodansha’s Initial D licensing page
Kodansha reports that the franchise had sold 55 million copies as of 2023. That is a dated manga-sales figure, not a measure of anime viewership or a ranking of quality. Readers who want to continue with the source material can find the manga through the books linked from Kodansha’s page; current editions, stock, and prices are not established here.

MF Ghost: a connected follow-up with public-road races
MF Ghost is the natural next choice if you want another series from Initial D creator Shuichi Shigeno. Its official site calls it Initial D’s successor and places it in a near-future Japan where self-driving cars are widespread but public-road races remain popular. The story follows Kanata, who returns to Japan after attending a racing school in Britain. MF Ghost official series introduction Avex Pictures’ MF Ghost page
The competition also changes the spectacle: Avex’s description names Porsche, Ferrari, and Lamborghini among the cars entering the MFG races. The official site says the manga has sold more than 7 million copies, without dating that figure on the page, and that the complete comic comprises 23 volumes. The manga is a concrete option if you want to read the story rather than only watch it.
The official series introduction says the third TV season began broadcasting on January 4, 2026. That broadcast information does not tell you whether the show is currently streaming in your country. The official news index records season and Blu-ray announcements, but does not provide a reliable country-by-country streaming guide. MF Ghost official news

Where to check what you can watch
Streaming rights change by country and over time. The official sources cited above establish series details and broadcast or release announcements, not current streaming availability by territory. Check the services available in your region for the title and season you want; do not assume that a broadcast or Blu-ray announcement means a season is streaming where you live.
