There is no official, objective ranking of the best Black wrestlers in WWE history. A fair comparison weighs WWE championship accomplishments, in-ring success, longevity and historical influence—while keeping achievements in other promotions separate. By those measures, Bobo Brazil, Rocky Johnson, Ron Simmons, Booker T, The Rock and Kofi Kingston form a compelling shortlist, though their contributions are not all alike.
How to compare their legacies
WWE’s historical retrospectives highlight barrier-breaking Hall of Famers, while USA Network’s feature focuses on influential Black world champions. Those are different lenses, not a shared ranking. This list brings them together: it considers documented WWE milestones and titles alongside influence on representation and the performers who followed.
- Championship record: WWE titles count as WWE achievements; titles won in WCW or another promotion remain credited to that promotion.
- Historical milestones: Barrier-breaking accomplishments matter even when they are not individual championship records.
- Influence: Contemporary testimony and retrospective accounts provide context, but influence is not a measurable statistic.
- Breadth: Singles and tag-team accomplishments both contribute to a career’s significance.
The order below is not a definitive ranking. The available profiles document milestones and careers, but do not establish a common scoring system for comparing the wrestlers.
Six of the most significant Black wrestlers in WWE history
Bobo Brazil: a barrier-breaking Hall of Famer
Bobo Brazil belongs in any account of Black wrestling history because of his place in WWE’s Hall of Fame. WWE identifies him as the first African-American inducted, in 1994, in its retrospective on African-American Hall of Famers who broke barriers. That milestone makes his legacy significant even in a comparison focused on more recent WWE title records.

Rocky Johnson: a landmark tag-team champion
On November 15, 1983, Rocky Johnson and Tony Atlas won the World Tag Team Championship. WWE records them as the first African-American team to win that title. The milestone belongs to the team, not to Johnson alone, and it should not be mistaken for an individual singles championship. WWE’s Rocky Johnson profile documents the achievement.
Ron Simmons: a trailblazer whose influence reached the next generation
WWE describes Ron Simmons as a barrier-breaker who helped pave the way for later stars including Booker T and The Rock. Booker T recalled Simmons’s example in WWE’s historical retrospective: “[Ron Simmons] gave me the blueprint for what it was going to take for me to make it in this business.” The quotation is testimony to Simmons’s influence, rather than a statistic or a ranking. WWE’s profile of Simmons and its Hall of Fame retrospective provide the historical context.

Booker T: a WWE champion and King of the Ring
Booker T’s WWE record includes a World Heavyweight Championship, victory in the 2006 King of the Ring tournament and induction into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2013. His career also includes achievements in WCW; those belong to his WCW record and should not be counted as WWE titles. The distinction matters because summaries of his full career can combine accomplishments from different promotions. WWE’s Booker T profile lists his record.
The Rock: a defining Black world champion
The Rock is included among influential Black world champions in USA Network’s retrospective, and WWE’s account of Ron Simmons’s legacy names him as one of the later stars Simmons helped pave the way for. Those sources support his place in a discussion of representation and influence; they do not provide a comparative score against the other wrestlers here. See USA Network’s feature on influential Black world champions and WWE’s Ron Simmons profile.

That breadth of singles and tag-team accomplishments makes him a strong candidate on championship record as well as representation. WWE’s Kofi Kingston profile documents the titles.
Which wrestlers stand out under each measure?
| Measure | Standout example | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Hall of Fame barrier-breaking | Bobo Brazil | WWE identifies him as the first African-American inducted into its Hall of Fame, in 1994. |
| Tag-team milestone | Rocky Johnson and Tony Atlas | WWE records their November 15, 1983 World Tag Team Championship win as the first by an African-American team. |
| Influence on later stars | Ron Simmons | WWE credits his legacy with helping pave the way for Booker T and The Rock; Booker T described Simmons as a model for succeeding in wrestling. |
| WWE singles and tournament achievements | Booker T | His WWE record includes the World Heavyweight Championship, the 2006 King of the Ring and a 2013 Hall of Fame induction. |
| Range of WWE titles | Kofi Kingston | His WWE profile lists world, Intercontinental, United States and tag-team championships. |
| Influential Black world champion | The Rock | USA Network includes him in its retrospective on influential Black world champions. |
Why there is no single definitive winner
The answer changes with the question. A reader prioritizing barrier-breaking history may put Bobo Brazil or Ron Simmons near the top; one focused on WWE titles and tournament achievements may favor Booker T or Kofi Kingston. Rocky Johnson’s documented landmark is a tag-team achievement with Tony Atlas, while The Rock is prominent in accounts of influential Black world champions. These are distinct forms of significance, and the cited sources do not rank them against one another.

For a documentary-style view of WWE history, the clearest conclusion is not that one wrestler outranks all the rest, but that Black wrestlers’ impact spans early Hall of Fame recognition, landmark tag-team success, generational influence and championship accomplishments across WWE eras.
