The Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Ultimate Edition is the longer, R-rated home-video cut. Warner Bros. described it as containing over 30 minutes of previously unseen story and action; one Canadian digital release record lists it at 183 minutes, compared with the theatrical cut’s reported 151 minutes. It adds story material, including Jena Malone’s character, but whether that makes the film better is a matter of taste.
How much longer is the Ultimate Edition?
Warner Bros. Entertainment Italia described the Ultimate Edition as including “over 30 minutes” of previously unseen story and action in its June 8, 2016 home-video announcement. GameSpot reported the theatrical cut at 151 minutes, while Blu-ray.com lists the Canadian digital Ultimate Edition at 183 minutes. Those edition-specific runtimes differ by 32 minutes, consistent with the studio’s rounded description.
The 183-minute figure comes from a Canadian digital release record, not a universal runtime guarantee for every regional package. The theatrical runtime is GameSpot’s reported figure.

More story and character detail
The extended cut restores additional story and action and gives some minor characters more material. GameSpot specifically reported the inclusion of Jena Malone’s character. Director Zack Snyder also discussed added appearances and Easter eggs, but the available reporting does not provide a dependable, complete list of every changed or added scene.

Why the rating differs
The theatrical cut was rated PG-13, while the Ultimate Edition was announced as R-rated. GameSpot reported producer Charles Roven’s explanation that longer intense sequences raised the cumulative intensity. That explanation does not establish that the entire extended cut is more graphic or that it contains extensive gore.
Which version should you watch?
Choose the Ultimate Edition if you want the added material
It is the option for viewers interested in additional story context and character material, and who are comfortable with roughly half an hour more viewing time and an R rating.
Rank #2
- Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice (Ultimate Edition) - Blu-ray Brand New
Choose the theatrical cut if you want the shorter version
The theatrical cut is the more concise option. The existence of extra footage alone does not settle whether the extended version works better; that is a subjective judgment.
