Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis met while playing Michael Kelso and Jackie Burkhart on That ’70s Show in 1998, but their real-life romance began much later. Kunis has said they were friends for years before reconnecting and becoming a couple in 2012. Their public milestones followed: engagement and their first child in 2014, marriage in 2015, a second child in 2016, and a return to the franchise in That ’90s Show.
1998: They meet on That ’70s Show
Kunis and Kutcher met as young actors cast on the Fox sitcom That ’70s Show. Their characters, Jackie Burkhart and Michael Kelso, became an on-screen couple, but the actors were not dating at the time. TIME’s 2014 account places their first meeting on the show in 1998 (TIME).
That distinction matters: the fictional romance came first, while the real relationship developed years after the original series began.
2012: A friendship becomes a relationship
After knowing one another for years, Kunis and Kutcher reconnected at an awards show. ABC News reported that this took place after Kutcher had separated from his former wife, Demi Moore; that sequence is useful context, not proof of a cause. Kunis later described the shift from friendship to romance in her interview with Howard Stern: “I think it took him and I both by surprise,” she said (ABC News).

2021–2023: A commercial and a return to the sitcom world
In 2021, the pair appeared together in a Cheetos Super Bowl commercial, as Harper’s Bazaar notes (Harper’s Bazaar). They also returned to the franchise through Netflix’s That ’90s Show, again playing Jackie and Kelso. In an October 2022 interview with Netflix Tudum, Kunis reflected on being back on the familiar set: “It was so weird because the stage is the same,” she told host Krista Smith (Netflix Tudum).
The reunion connected the professional story that began in 1998 with the later phase of their shared work. It does not change the chronology of their real relationship: their romance began in 2012, not during the original show.

A separate public controversy
In 2023, letters Kutcher and Kunis wrote seeking leniency for former That ’70s Show castmate Danny Masterson became public and drew criticism. The Associated Press reported that the couple apologized (Associated Press). This episode belongs to their public timeline, but it is separate from the account of how their relationship began.
