What is An Update on Our Family about?
The series examines family vlogging through the story of Myka and James Stauffer and their adopted son, Huxley. Warner Bros. Discovery describes family vlogging as parents posting a steady stream of lifestyle videos for subscribers, a practice it characterizes as popular and potentially lucrative. The documentary considers what can happen when family life is made public and shaped by an audience.
TIME reports that the Stauffers posted a video on May 26, 2020, confirming that they had dissolved Huxley’s adoption. They had adopted him from China in 2017. The Stauffers did not respond to the filmmakers’ outreach and did not participate in the series, according to TIME; the documentary’s account therefore does not include their direct participation.

The series prompts viewers to consider how children’s privacy and ability to consent are affected when parents share family experiences with an online audience. These are questions the documentary raises, not conclusions that should be generalized to every family channel.

Audience, attention, and money
Family videos can attract subscribers and sponsorships, creating financial incentives around what a family shares. TIME quotes cultural commentator Sophie Ross saying in the series, “Bringing new children into their family was a surefire way to get more views, get more followers, get more sponsorships, and get more money.” That is Ross’s interpretation in the documentary, not an established account of the Stauffers’ motives.
Transnational adoption
The Stauffer story also brings transnational adoption into the documentary’s frame. The series addresses that context alongside online exposure and monetization; it should not be taken as a general account of adoption or adoptees’ experiences.

Who made the series, and when did it premiere?
An Update on Our Family is a three-part HBO Original directed and executive produced by Rachel Mason and produced by Vox Media Studios. HBO premiered it on January 15, 2025, with the remaining episodes scheduled for the following Wednesdays through January 29. Warner Bros. Discovery announced that it would also stream on Max.
Where can you watch An Update on Our Family?
Max was the streaming service named in Warner Bros. Discovery’s 2025 launch announcement. Hulu and Prime Video also have series listing pages, but a listing alone does not confirm that the episodes are available in every country or subscription plan. Check the service’s local catalog and your plan for current availability.

Where is Huxley now?
TIME reported a historical local law-enforcement wellbeing check in its January 15, 2025 article. That report does not establish Huxley’s present circumstances. The series and available reporting should not be treated as a basis for claims about his current life or for seeking identifying details.
