Batman: The Brave and the Bold is the DCU’s announced Batman film, built around Bruce Wayne and his son, Damian Wayne, as Robin. As of August 2026, it remains in development: TheWrap reported Christina Hodson was writing the screenplay and Andy Muschietti remained attached to direct, while James Gunn said the project was “in no way on hold,” according to GamesRadar. No release date, cast, finished screenplay, or production start has been confirmed in the sources cited below.
What is The Brave and the Bold about?
DC Studios announced the film on January 31, 2023, as part of its first slate of DCU projects. It is intended to introduce the DCU’s Batman and Robin, with Robin identified as Damian Wayne, Bruce Wayne’s son. The premise draws on Grant Morrison’s Batman comics. At the 2023 DCU presentation, James Gunn described it as “a very strange father/son story,” as reported by TheWrap.

The announced setup makes the relationship between Bruce and Damian central: this is not simply another Batman crime story, but a father-and-son story in which Damian is already Robin. DC’s announcement describes the project as inspired by Morrison’s comics, not as a direct adaptation of a particular storyline.
Which Batman continuity does it belong to?
The film is planned as part of the shared DCU continuity. In its January 2023 interview, DC said projects beginning with its first slate would be connected and consistent, while distinguishing them from standalone Elseworlds stories. The studio named Matt Reeves’ The Batman as a separate story. TheWrap reported in January 2026 that the DCU Batman and Bat-family will remain separate from Robert Pattinson’s Batman in Reeves’ films.

That distinction means Pattinson’s version should not be treated as the lead for this project. DC also said in 2023 that its release planning would avoid placing The Brave and the Bold in the same six-month period as The Batman. That was a scheduling principle, not a release date or release window for this film.
Who is making the film?
Writer and director
TheWrap reported on January 21, 2026, that Christina Hodson had been tapped to write the screenplay and that Andy Muschietti remained attached to direct. Those are reported development roles; no production start has been announced in the sources cited here.
Rank #2
Earlier context helps explain why Muschietti’s involvement was sometimes described conditionally. ComicBook.com reported in February 2025 that DC Studios was developing the screenplay and planned to show it to Muschietti when it considered it ready, after which the studio and director would decide whether the project was a good fit for him. The later January 2026 report is the newer update on his attachment.
Latest status
On August 27, 2026, GamesRadar reported James Gunn’s response on Threads to a claim that the film was on hold: “It doesn’t sound like something Andy would have said but the project is in no way on hold.” GamesRadar also cited Gunn’s earlier comment that the team was working on a script and that a screenwriter was working on it. The latest statement addresses the hold claim; it does not establish that the screenplay is finished or that filming has begun.
