Bakaiti is a Hindi family comedy-drama about the Katarias of Ghaziabad, whose financial strain leads them to rent a room in their ancestral home. In her 1 August 2025 review for Scroll.in, Nandini Ramnath finds that the family’s constant, high-volume bickering can wear on viewers, even as the show follows people who remain bound to one another.
What is Bakaiti about?
The series follows the Kataria household in Ghaziabad: Sanjay (Rajesh Tailang), his wife Sushma (Sheeba Chaddha), daughter Naina (Tanya Sharma) and son Bharat (Aaditya Shukla). Under financial pressure, they decide to rent a room in their ancestral home. Bringing a tenant into the family’s limited space unsettles household routines and relationships.
ZEE5’s Season 1 episode descriptions chart the family’s attempts to earn money, the children’s efforts to drive away prospective tenants and the eventual arrival of a tenant. They also describe clashes involving Sanjay’s brother Ajay. The Indian Express review identifies Naina’s education ambitions and disagreement over ancestral property among the season’s concerns.
Why does the family’s bickering divide the experience?
Ramnath’s main reservation is the Katarias’ persistent sniping: the family, in her description, starts and ends the day arguing at high volume. Scroll’s headline says they “get on each other’s nerves – and yours too at times.” That is the reviewer’s judgment, not a guarantee of how every viewer will respond.
#1 Best Overall
- Udderly hilarious board game for family and friends game nights. Fun for big groups of 4-20+ players
- Easy to learn, quick to play and endlessly repayable board game. This version comes with 20 extra questions
- Think the same to win the game. Flip over a question and guess what your family and friends are thinking
- If your answer is in the majority, you win cows. If you’re the odd one out, you’re stuck with the pink cow of doom
- One of the best board games for families, adults, teens and kids aged 10+. Perfect icebreaker game. Easy and fun for everyone! Perfect as a Thanksgiving or Christmas game
The tension is built into the premise. The family’s money problems and shared home keep them in one another’s orbit, so ordinary disagreements can take up a lot of space. If you enjoy noisy domestic comedy and friction among relatives, that may be part of the appeal. If repeated arguments quickly become tiring for you, Ramnath’s criticism is a useful signal before you start.
What should viewers expect from Season 1?
The first season is a family story shaped by a practical decision—renting out a room—and by the resulting pressure on domestic space, money and relationships. The Indian Express points to Naina’s aspirations and the property dispute as additional strands, while ZEE5’s episode summaries foreground money-making schemes and tenant-related complications. These details suggest several family conflicts rather than a single tenant-focused plot.

For a review comparison, useful questions are whether the bickering feels comic or repetitive, whether financial pressure and crowded domestic space make the conflicts involving, and whether the slice-of-life pacing suits you. Those are ways to assess the differing critical responses, not evidence of a shared critical consensus.
How many episodes are there, and where can you watch?
The original Scroll.in review concerns Season 1, which premiered on 1 August 2025 with seven episodes. ZEE5’s listing, checked on 7 October 2026, shows two seasons and 14 episodes in total; it gives 25 September 2026 as Season 2’s release date. The expanded listing should not be confused with the scope of Ramnath’s original review.
