Billboard began in 1894 as Billboard Advertising, a trade publication for the bill-posting and outdoor-advertising business. Its title matched the work it covered: posting bills and posters. The publication became The Billboard in 1897. The historical record supports that connection, though it does not preserve a direct statement from the founders explaining exactly why they chose the name.

Billboard started as a trade paper, not a music publication

The University of Pennsylvania Libraries’ serial-history record says the magazine began in 1894 as Billboard Advertising and covered the bill-posting industry. The Library of Congress also records Billboard advertising as an earlier title. These records place the publication’s beginnings in advertising and posting notices, not music charts.

A retrospective published in The Billboard on September 14, 1912, describes the first issue, from November 1894, as focused on billposting, poster-printing, and advertising-agency interests. It identifies W. H. Donaldson and James Hennegan as founders and recalls that “The Billboard had a humble enough beginning.” That line describes the publication’s early scale; it does not explain the founders’ choice of name.

What “billboard” meant

The ordinary word refers to a board for posting bills or notices. Etymonline records bill-board in American English from 1845 and analyzes it as a combination of bill and board. That meaning fits the publication’s early focus on billposting and posters.

When the title changed

The publication’s first title was Billboard Advertising. The University of Pennsylvania Libraries’ record says it became The Billboard in 1897; the Library of Congress records The Billboard beginning with volume 9, number 1, dated February 1, 1897.

What can—and cannot—be said about the name

The strongest explanation is that the publication was named for the bill-posting trade it served. Its original title and early subject matter align closely with the word’s meaning. However, the records and retrospective cited here do not include a direct statement from founders Donaldson or Hennegan spelling out their naming decision. The trade connection is well supported; the founders’ exact intent remains undocumented in these sources.
