Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl booking became a political flashpoint because his outspoken criticism of Donald Trump and immigration policy met objections to Spanish-language music and gender-fluid fashion—and because the choice put Puerto Rican identity and belonging on the NFL’s biggest entertainment stage. Those were overlapping reactions, not one motive shared by every critic.
What happened at Super Bowl LX?
On September 28, 2025, the NFL, Apple Music, and Roc Nation announced Bad Bunny as the headliner for the Apple Music Super Bowl LX Halftime Show at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. The game and performance were scheduled for February 8, 2026. In the NFL’s announcement, Bad Bunny said the moment was “for my people, my culture, and our history.” The league described him as a global artist who could bridge genres, languages, and audiences.

The announcement prompted criticism before the show. The Washington Post reported objections to Bad Bunny’s politics, Spanish-language lyrics, gender-fluid fashion, and his concern that mainland concerts could expose Latino fans to immigration raids by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). That last point was his reported concern; it does not establish that raids took place at his concerts.
Why did some MAGA-aligned critics object?
His criticism of Trump and immigration policy
The Washington Post’s September 30, 2025, account traced Bad Bunny’s political profile to activity predating the Super Bowl booking. At a 2017 Hurricane Maria relief concert, he wore a T-shirt asking, “¿Tu eres twitero o presidente?” (“Are you a Twitter user or a president?”), a pointed reference to the federal response to the hurricane. He later publicly criticized Trump, supported Kamala Harris in the 2024 election, and used a 2025 music video to criticize Trump’s immigration agenda.

That record helps explain why critics treated the booking as more than a music choice. But reported objections do not show that every MAGA voter—or every person who disliked the performance—held the same political view.
Spanish-language music and gender presentation
Some criticism focused on Bad Bunny’s Spanish-language songs and gender-fluid fashion. Those complaints made language and presentation part of the debate over who belongs on a mainstream American entertainment stage. They are reported objections, not evidence that all critics opposed him for those reasons or that every Spanish-speaking viewer supported the booking.

His concern about ICE at mainland concerts
Bad Bunny’s reported concern about possible ICE raids at mainland U.S. concerts added a specific immigration-policy dimension. The Washington Post connected that concern to his decision not to tour the U.S. mainland in support of his album DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS. This was a concern he expressed, not a report that ICE carried out raids at his shows.
Why the choice carried meaning beyond the performer
Bad Bunny is from Puerto Rico, and he has made Puerto Rican identity a central subject of his public work. The Guardian described criticism that disputed his Americanness, despite Puerto Ricans being U.S. citizens. The Guardian also noted that Puerto Rico’s residents lack representation in Congress and cannot vote in presidential elections. Those details help explain why the halftime booking became an argument about belonging as well as music; they are not a complete account of Puerto Rico’s political status or history.

The NFL’s own announcement framed the choice in cultural terms: Bad Bunny’s statement connected the performance to his people, culture, and history, while the league emphasized his ability to reach across languages and genres. That was the league’s rationale, not proof that every viewer experienced the show as unifying.
How did the NFL respond?
In fall 2025, Commissioner Roger Goodell defended the selection, saying it was “carefully thought through” and that the league was confident the performance would be “a great show.” He acknowledged that major halftime choices can draw blowback and said the NFL was not reconsidering the booking.
Rank #4
The dispute was not the first time the NFL faced political pressure over a major event. The Washington Post compared the reaction with the league’s earlier controversy over players kneeling during the national anthem to protest racial inequality and police brutality. The issues and speakers differed: that dispute concerned players’ protest, while this one centered on a league-selected performer and objections involving language, immigration politics, gender presentation, and Puerto Rican identity.

Bad Bunny performed at the February 8, 2026, Super Bowl. The Associated Press reported a strong response in Puerto Rico and placed the performance in the context of his public work on Puerto Rican identity, immigration, and U.S. immigration policy. AP quoted Marielys Rojas, a Venezuelan woman who had lived in Puerto Rico for 22 years, saying, “He appeared at the right moment in the history of Latin America.” That reaction illustrates one audience perspective, not a measure of everyone’s response.

After the show, Reuters reported that Trump criticized the performance, including complaining that it was mostly in Spanish. Reuters also discussed possible political consequences; those were projections and commentary, not established electoral outcomes.
