Babes is a 2024 comedy about pregnancy, motherhood and a long-standing friendship. Directed by Pamela Adlon and written by Ilana Glazer and Josh Rabinowitz, it follows childhood friends Eden and Dawn after Eden decides to pursue pregnancy on her own following a one-night stand.
What is Babes about?
Eden (Ilana Glazer) is single when she decides to have a baby after a one-night stand. Her choice, and the changes that follow, test her friendship with Dawn (Michelle Buteau), her childhood best friend, who is at a different stage of adulthood. The film’s central story is not only Eden’s pregnancy but also how the friends navigate the strain and change in their relationship. NEON’s official film page describes that premise.

What kind of comedy is it?
The comedy is frank about pregnancy, childbirth and parenting, while keeping the friendship between Eden and Dawn at the center. In a TIME interview published May 17, 2024, the creators discussed the film’s approach to motherhood and staying close to friends after having a baby. They also described a scene in which the friends destroy a breast pump after pumping has become physically and mentally burdensome; Glazer said the scene drew on co-writer Rabinowitz’s experience. That is the creators’ account of the scene, not medical advice or a claim about everyone’s experience of breastfeeding.
Rating and runtime
The Associated Press review published May 15, 2024 gives the film an R rating for sexual material, language throughout and some drug use, and reports a runtime of 109 minutes. Rotten Tomatoes lists a 104-minute runtime, so the available listings disagree; check the platform or edition you plan to watch for its displayed duration rather than treating either figure as definitive.
