Halina Reijn’s film is less interested in delivering a conventional erotic-thriller shock than in asking what happens when a woman stops pretending she does not want what she wants.
What is Babygirl about?
Written and directed by Halina Reijn, Babygirl follows Romy (Kidman), a high-powered CEO whose affair with Samuel (Dickinson), a much younger intern, puts her career and family at risk. The film is an English-language U.S. production, runs 114 minutes, and also stars Antonio Banderas and Sophie Wilde. The Venice Biennale’s 2024 program entry lists the runtime and credits; A24’s film page gives the central setup.
This is an erotic drama that toys with the machinery of the thriller: secrecy, danger, workplace rules and the possibility of exposure. But its central tension is not simply whether Romy will be caught. It is whether she can acknowledge her desire without converting it into another performance of control.
Do the performances carry the film?
Nicole Kidman as Romy
Kidman makes Romy’s composure feel like both an achievement and a trap. She plays a woman practiced at managing rooms, relationships and appearances, then lets small breaks in that control register as the affair takes hold. The role depends on visible contradiction: Romy is powerful in public, but uncertain about what she wants in private. Kidman gives that conflict more texture than a simple portrait of a successful woman behaving recklessly.

Harris Dickinson as Samuel
Dickinson makes Samuel difficult to reduce to either a seducer or a naïve younger man. His insolence unsettles Romy’s authority, while flashes of vulnerability keep the dynamic from becoming a one-note game of provocation. The friction between his confidence and her guardedness gives their scenes much of their charge.
Antonio Banderas and Sophie Wilde
Banderas and Wilde broaden the consequences beyond the affair itself, bringing the marriage and workplace relationships into view. They give the story a social frame: Romy’s choices affect people who are not participants in her private experiment. The supporting performances help make the stakes legible even when the film’s attention drifts toward the couple’s charged encounters.

How does the film handle eroticism, comedy and suspense?
Reijn lets comic awkwardness coexist with erotic tension. The result is not a sustained, sleek thriller so much as a film that keeps puncturing its own glamour. Jessica Kiang, reviewing for BFI Sight and Sound, reads it as a sly, playful erotic drama and a winking comedy of manners. Associated Press critic Jake Coyle likewise calls it darkly comic, while finding it less daring than its provocative surface suggests.
That tonal play is a strength when it exposes the absurdity of trying to keep desire tidy and discreet. It can also soften the thriller edge: danger sometimes feels less immediate than the setup promises. The film’s motifs and charged encounters create a distinct mood, but viewers expecting escalating menace or a tightly wound cat-and-mouse plot may find that the comedy and character study take precedence.

What does Babygirl say about power and consent?
The affair crosses an unmistakable hierarchy: Romy is the CEO, Samuel an intern. Their private negotiations around dominance and submission therefore sit inside a workplace relationship with unequal authority and real professional risks. The film does not make that imbalance disappear by treating the encounters as consensual; rather, the hierarchy is part of what makes the situation volatile and ethically complicated.
Kiang emphasizes the film’s attention to consent amid its play with dominance and submission. Coyle, by contrast, observes that the workplace-power thread becomes less central than the film’s broader interest in acknowledging desire. That difference points to a real tension in the movie: its most intriguing subject is Romy’s interior life, but its premise also raises questions about the responsibilities attached to her authority. The film engages those questions without turning into a procedural account of workplace misconduct.

Does it deliver on the erotic-thriller promise?
Reijn has said she consciously engages with the history of erotic thrillers and with the expectation that women who act on taboo desire will be punished. In a BFI Sight and Sound interview, she explains that films such as Basic Instinct and 9½ Weeks helped her feel less embarrassed by darker thoughts, even as their endings felt unreal to her in their treatment of transgressive women. She also says, “But for me the sexuality is only a metaphor for a woman in an existential crisis.”
That intention helps explain why Babygirl does not simply reproduce the old genre’s moral arithmetic. Kiang sees it swerving away from the expected punishment; Coyle considers it a modern update of the 1990s erotic thriller, but not quite as daring as it appears. The film’s interest lies less in overturning every convention than in shifting the emphasis: desire matters, but so do shame, self-image and the cost of maintaining a perfectly controlled life.

Reijn’s director’s statement for the Venice Biennale puts that aim plainly: “To me, feminism is the freedom to study a woman’s vulnerability, love, shame, rage, and inner beast.” She describes Romy and Samuel’s affair as a way to explore power, gender, age, hierarchy and instinct, with the potential to be liberating and healing. That is the director’s stated intention; whether the film earns the language of liberation is a question each viewer may answer differently.
Verdict
Babygirl is most compelling when Kidman’s tightly managed executive and Dickinson’s unpredictable intern make desire look at once thrilling, awkward and risky. Its humor gives the erotic drama a welcome edge, though it occasionally blunts the danger promised by the thriller framework. The result is an engaging, performance-led film more curious about a woman’s admission of desire than about delivering a conventional cautionary tale. The Associated Press’s Jake Coyle rated it three stars out of four.
