For the complete local broadcast schedule, use an antenna; for local news, weather, and selected live programming, try a station’s official app, NewsON, or a free ad-supported streaming service.
“Local TV” can mean a full broadcast channel, a local newscast, or a national network stream. Those are not interchangeable. The options below explain what each one delivers and how to find it.
Choose based on what you want to watch
| Your goal | Best first option | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Complete local ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, CW, or PBS broadcast schedule | Over-the-air antenna | The actual free broadcast signal, subject to reception at your home. |
| One station’s local news, weather, or breaking coverage | Station website or app | Selected streams and clips; a full channel feed is not guaranteed. |
| Local newscasts from participating stations | NewsON | Live and on-demand newscasts, not usually a station’s entire schedule. |
| Local or regional news on a smart TV or streaming device | Tubi, Pluto TV, Local Now, Zeam, or Haystack News | Selected feeds and channels; availability varies by market and device. |
| Local news while traveling | NewsON or a participating station/FAST app | You may get a regional or different-market station rather than your home affiliate. |
| Sports or network primetime | Antenna first; paid live-TV service if needed | Online rights may be restricted even when local news streams free. |
The FCC distinguishes free over-the-air broadcasting from free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST): an antenna receives a station’s broadcast signal, while a FAST service carries internet channels that may include only selected local programming. See the FCC’s overview of FAST services and broadcast television.
1. Use an antenna for the full local broadcast channel
An antenna is the strongest free option when you want the local station itself: its news, weather, network shows, and other programming carried over the air. It receives broadcast television rather than streaming it over the internet, so it does not require a broadband connection or TV-service login. The FCC says broadcast stations must transmit at least one free over-the-air video program signal to viewers; reception still depends on location and equipment. FCC explanation of free over-the-air signals.

Check reception and install
- Enter your address or ZIP code in AntennaWeb’s reception lookup before buying an antenna. Predictions help identify nearby stations and likely reception conditions; actual results can differ.
- For strong nearby signals, try an indoor antenna. If signals are weaker, distant, or blocked by buildings or terrain, an attic or rooftop antenna may work better.
- Connect the antenna to the TV’s coaxial antenna input.
- In the TV’s settings, find Channels, Broadcast, Antenna, or Channel Scan. Labels differ by manufacturer.
- Set the signal source to Antenna or Air, not Cable, then choose Auto Scan or Auto Program and save the results.
- If channels are missing, reposition the antenna—often higher or near a window—and run the scan again.
Know the reception limits
- Distance, terrain, trees, buildings, wiring, and antenna placement all affect reception. An indoor antenna is not equally effective in every home.
- An amplifier cannot clear an obstruction or fix poor placement; it may also overload a strong signal.
- A station can change its broadcast frequency while keeping the familiar virtual channel number. Rescan when a station announces a frequency change; the FCC provides antenna rescan guidance.
- NextGen TV (ATSC 3.0) reception may involve different tuner, reception, or encryption requirements from ordinary ATSC 1.0 broadcasts. Do not assume every TV can receive every NextGen signal.
2. Watch the local station’s website or app
A station’s own site or app is often the best online source for that station’s local reporting. Depending on the station, it may offer live newscasts, a breaking-news stream, weather coverage, clips, replays, or selected programming. It may not offer a continuous feed of the full broadcast channel.
Find the right station feed
- Search by station call sign or city—for example, “WXYZ live”—rather than searching only for “ABC live.” ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX are national networks; the local affiliate is a separate station.
- Use the station’s official website or install its app from your TV or mobile device’s official app store.
- Allow location access if requested, then look for labels such as Watch Live, Live Newscast, News Stream, or Weather.
- If a stream is unavailable, check the station’s schedule and official channels for an alternate breaking-news feed.
Streaming rights vary by program and market. A station may stream local news but restrict sports, primetime, syndicated shows, or special events. NBC says local streams are location-based, depend on the station and applicable agreements, and may require a participating TV-provider login. Its guidance also says viewers cannot simply pay NBC directly for an NBC live stream without a qualifying TV subscription; unlocked episodes, when available, are not a live local channel. NBC local-stream availability and NBC’s live-stream login guidance.
3. Use NewsON for participating local newscasts
NewsON carries live and on-demand newscasts from participating U.S. stations. The company says its service is available without a cable subscription or login and supports its website, mobile devices, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Samsung Smart TV, and Vizio. Station participation and coverage can change, so check the current directory rather than assuming your affiliate is included. NewsON service and supported-device information.
NewsON’s main site currently claims more than 285 station partners in more than 150 markets, while its About page gives a different market count. Treat those figures as the company’s changing service claims, not a guarantee of coverage in a particular ZIP code. NewsON’s current coverage claim.
Open a newscast
- Open NewsON in a browser or install the app on a supported device.
- Use the station or market directory and search by city, state, or station.
- Select a live newscast or an on-demand broadcast. Add a station to favorites if that option is available.
- If your station is absent, try its official app or website, then check a FAST service. Use an antenna if you need the full local channel.
NewsON is designed around local newscasts, not every show on a station’s 24-hour schedule. Depending on your location and the participating stations, you may find a nearby or regional station rather than the affiliate serving your exact ZIP code.

4. Check free ad-supported streaming services
FAST services offer free, ad-supported internet channels. Some carry local or regional news, but their feeds are not necessarily the local broadcast station for your home, and the lineup can change. The FCC has identified services such as Pluto TV, Tubi, Local Now, and NewsON among platforms that may carry local broadcast content; platform availability does not mean every station is carried in every market. FCC discussion of local content on internet platforms.
Tubi
Tubi’s help center lists a Live News section for U.S. viewers and says availability varies by device and location. Its listed local feeds include stations such as Fox 5 New York, Fox 11 Los Angeles, Fox 32 Chicago, Fox 4 Dallas–Fort Worth, Fox 13 Seattle, News 12 New York, and WMUR New Hampshire. The company describes its live-news offering as including more than 55 live channels and more than 40 local news channels; these are company-reported figures, and the lineup may change. Check Tubi’s Live News availability and device information, local-news channel list, and live-news overview.
Pluto TV
Pluto TV offers free ad-supported live channels, including national news and selected local-news feeds. A national news channel is not the same as your local ABC, CBS, NBC, or FOX affiliate. Check the app’s current live-channel guide for feeds available on your device and in your location.

Local Now
Local Now focuses on local, regional, national, and weather-oriented programming. Its lineup and local-market availability should be checked in the app. It can also carry national services: NBC lists Local Now as one place to watch NBC News NOW, which is a national news stream rather than a guarantee of a local NBC affiliate. NBC News NOW viewing options.
Zeam and Haystack News
Zeam and Haystack News are additional places to look for local and regional reporting. Their station and market coverage varies, so treat them as discovery tools rather than substitutes guaranteed to carry your local broadcast schedule: Zeam and Haystack News.

Avoid Obstacles: The effective range may vary based on your location and distance. Large obstacles like trees, valleys, or mountains can reduce signal strength. For best results, install the antenna away from high-power household devices.
Search across services
- Install Tubi, Pluto TV, Local Now, Zeam, or Haystack News on a compatible device.
- Open its Live, News, Local, or Channels section.
- Search by city, state, station call sign, or topic, and allow location access if prompted.
- Check more than one service: the same station may be available on one platform and absent from another.
- Confirm the feed’s city or station identity. A national news channel or a nearby market’s feed may sound local without being your own affiliate.
What affects online availability?
This guide is U.S.-focused. Online access can depend on your ZIP code or designated market area, a station’s licensing and platform agreements, device support, location permissions, and current carriage arrangements. A service may work on a phone but not have an app for a particular TV. An online platform may also show local programming from a different market than the viewer’s own; the FCC discusses this distinction in its report on internet platforms and local broadcast content.
“Free” here means no recurring TV subscription for the listed access. FAST services are ad-supported; an antenna or compatible device may require an upfront purchase, and streaming services require internet access. An app may also ask for an account or location permission, and selected programming may have separate authentication requirements.

My local station is missing from an app
- Confirm the station’s call sign and city.
- Enable location permissions for the app or device.
- Search the station’s official website, then try NewsON and the FAST services listed above.
- If you need the full channel, check antenna reception. Station-platform agreements and rights can affect online availability.
The app shows national news instead of local coverage
Look for the local affiliate by call sign and check the city shown in the feed or program title. A national service such as NBC News NOW is not the local NBC station’s complete channel.
The stream works on my phone but not my TV
- Check whether the service supports your TV or streaming-device model; update the app and the device software.
- Try casting from your phone if both devices support it, or use the service’s web version on a computer connected to the TV by HDMI.
- Check location permission separately on the TV. A permission granted on the phone does not necessarily apply to another device.
A live stream says it is unavailable in my area
- Check location services and disable a VPN or proxy that may interfere with location checks.
- Confirm the service is available where you are; U.S.-restricted services may not work abroad.
- Try the station’s own website instead of a network app. The station may not have licensed the stream for your market.
NBC lists location errors, missing affiliates, and provider-station disputes among possible causes of unavailable local streams. NBC location and live-stream troubleshooting.
An antenna scan finds no channels
- Set the input to Antenna or Air, not Cable, and run a full automatic scan.
- Move the antenna higher or nearer a window; remove unnecessary splitters and test another room if possible.
- Review predicted reception at AntennaWeb. If signals are weak, consider an attic or rooftop antenna rather than assuming an amplifier will solve the problem.
- Rescan after a station announces a broadcast-frequency change.
I can watch news but not sports or primetime
That is often a rights limitation, not a device problem. Local-news streams may be available while live sports, primetime, syndicated shows, or special events require an antenna or a separate paid service. If you consider a paid live-TV service, check its current local-station coverage for your ZIP code; no one service should be assumed to carry every station everywhere.
Quick Recap
Which option should you use?
- For the complete local broadcast lineup: start with an antenna and check reception before buying one.
- For one station’s news and weather: use its official website or app.
- For local newscasts from multiple participating stations: try NewsON.
- For additional local or regional feeds on a streaming device: browse Tubi, Pluto TV, Local Now, Zeam, and Haystack News.
- For programming that is not freely streamed: use an antenna where available, or compare paid services separately.
