DirecTV and Disney ended their blackout on September 14, 2024, restoring Disney networks to DirecTV satellite, DirecTV Stream, and U-verse customers. The agreement promised more flexible channel packages and access to Disney streaming services, but it did not immediately publish a full menu of new plans or guarantee lower bills. DirecTV later introduced genre-based packages; whether those are better depends on which channels and streaming services a household actually uses.
What happened in the DirecTV–Disney blackout?
The previous carriage agreement expired on September 1, 2024, and Disney programming disappeared from DirecTV, DirecTV Stream, and U-verse. The affected services included ESPN and related sports networks, Disney Channel and other Disney networks, FX networks, National Geographic networks, and Disney-owned ABC stations. The precise ABC impact varied by market and service.
The dispute began during a prominent sports stretch that included the U.S. Open and the start of the college-football and NFL seasons. DirecTV customers temporarily lost access to the affected linear channels, not simply to Disney’s streaming apps. Why were DirecTV and Disney fighting?
DirecTV’s argument
DirecTV said Disney sought higher fees and packaging rules that required customers to pay for more Disney channels than they wanted. It argued for more authority to offer smaller, targeted bundles, and criticized the traditional model in which distributors pay for large linear portfolios while valuable programming also moves to Disney’s streaming services.

Disney’s argument
Disney said its networks remained valuable and that DirecTV’s approach would undermine the economics of traditional television distribution. In a September 4 statement, Disney said it had proposed packages responsive to DirecTV’s stated needs and ways to connect customers with its direct-to-consumer services. The two companies’ public statements described opposing positions; the complete commercial terms of their later contract were not published in the announcement. When did the blackout end, and what did the deal promise?
On September 14, 2024, the companies announced an “agreement in principle,” and Disney’s linear networks were restored while they worked toward a multiyear carriage agreement. That announcement ended the immediate blackout; it was not a public release of every contract term or a finished customer package grid. The agreement announcement described four broad elements:

- More flexible ways to package Disney channels.
- Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ access in selected DirecTV packages through a wholesale arrangement.
- The possibility of offering those streaming services separately on an à-la-carte basis.
The streaming-service language did not mean that every linear network—such as ESPN, FX, or Disney Channel—would be sold individually. Nor did the announcement say every customer would get every app, that every plan would cost less, or that satellite and streaming customers would have identical terms.
What did “better channel packages” become?
DirecTV later moved toward genre-based packages and smaller add-ons rather than a fully à-la-carte channel menu. Its announced options included MyEntertainment, MySports, MyKids, and MiEspañol, plus mini-packs and the separate free, ad-supported MyFree DIRECTV product. DirecTV presented the genre packs as alternatives to a one-size-fits-all bundle; each remains a package with its own lineup and eligibility, not a promise that viewers can select any single channel they want. This was a partial fulfillment of the settlement’s flexibility promise: customers gained more targeted package types, but not an unrestricted channel-by-channel ordering system. A package may also omit networks a household had in a broader plan.

DirecTV’s offers and prices can change. The following figures are the displayed signals described in its materials as of August 2026; they are not guaranteed future rates. Confirm the package, service type, device conditions, and ZIP-code lineup before signing up.

These examples are not interchangeable: the settlement named ESPN+, while current DirecTV materials describe particular offers that may include ESPN Unlimited. Check the exact service tier attached to the package rather than assuming the names refer to the same subscription.
Do satellite and streaming customers get the same benefits?
No. Eligibility varies by service, package, and equipment. Some streaming-app benefits are limited to streaming accounts or require an eligible Signature or genre package and a qualifying Gemini device. DirecTV’s current streaming-app information explains applicable conditions; its Disney+ and Hulu support page describes activation and account requirements. Do not assume a satellite plan receives every streaming inclusion shown for a streaming offer, or that a smart TV or third-party device qualifies where Gemini is required.

Will the new packages save you money?
There is no universal answer. A smaller genre package may cost less for a household that watches mostly entertainment or sports, but the savings depend on what it replaces and what the household still needs to buy separately. Compare the ongoing price—not just an introductory offer—with the current bill and the cost of any services or channels the new lineup leaves out.
- Sports-focused household: MySports may be a better fit than a broad package if its market-specific lineup includes the sports channels the household watches. Check regional sports networks and local availability before switching.
- Family that wants Disney streaming and children’s programming: MyEntertainment or MyKids may be worth comparing, but verify the children’s channel lineup and whether the included streaming tiers meet the family’s needs.
- General viewer who wants ESPN, local stations, and broad entertainment: A smaller pack may not replace a wider traditional package. Check local station availability and the exact channel list before treating the lower entry price as a comparable bill.
For any comparison, include taxes, fees, equipment charges, regional sports fees, promotional expiration, and existing streaming subscriptions. DirecTV’s package lineup and genre-pack lineup are useful starting points, but local availability can vary by ZIP code and county.
What does “included” mean for Disney+ and Hulu?
Included generally means the eligible DirecTV plan provides the specified subscription without a separately listed app subscription charge. It does not necessarily mean ad-free service, free equipment, no taxes or fees, or permanent access after changing or canceling a qualifying plan. The offers described in DirecTV’s materials include ad-supported tiers. Existing Disney+, Hulu, or ESPN subscriptions are not automatically replaced, so a customer may continue to be billed directly by the service after activating a DirecTV benefit.
Check for duplicate billing
- Confirm that the DirecTV account and package qualify, then follow the activation instructions in DirecTV’s account tools or email.
- Verify that the included service works under the intended Disney account.
- Review billing with Disney, Hulu, or ESPN separately. Cancel an older direct subscription only after confirming that the DirecTV activation is active and that the old subscription is not needed.
- Recheck eligibility before changing or canceling the DirecTV package, since the included benefit may depend on keeping a qualifying plan.
What if a Disney channel is still missing?
First distinguish a linear channel from a streaming app: Disney+ does not substitute for a channel such as ESPN or FX. Then check the service and package, since a channel may not be part of the customer’s lineup or may have market-specific availability.
- Identify whether the account is DirecTV satellite, DirecTV Stream, or U-verse.
- Check the current lineup for the customer’s ZIP code and package, including the DirecTV package lineup where applicable.
- If the channel is listed, sign out and back in to the DirecTV app or restart the receiver or Gemini device.
- Confirm the account’s package and billing status. Contact DirecTV if the channel is listed for that account but remains unavailable.
What the settlement did not resolve
The agreement ended this blackout, not the possibility of future carriage disputes between distributors and programmers. It also did not establish that all Disney-owned networks appear in every smaller package, that every customer can buy individual linear channels, or that a particular package will always be cheaper. Lineups, app tiers, prices, and eligibility can change; check the current offer and your local channel list before making a decision.
