Plex made two separate changes: Plex Pass became more expensive in 2025, and remote playback of personal video from a Plex Media Server began requiring a qualifying subscription on affected apps. A server administrator’s Plex Pass can cover other authorized viewers; otherwise, a remote viewer can use their own Plex Pass or Remote Watch Pass. New Lifetime Plex Pass purchases cost $749.99 from July 1, 2026, while the 2025 monthly and annual prices remain $6.99 and $69.99. Prices can vary by country and billing channel.

Who needs a subscription to stream a personal Plex library remotely?

The requirement concerns remote playback of personal movies, TV shows, and other video hosted on a Plex Media Server. For an affected app and remote stream, at least one of the server administrator or the viewer must have an eligible subscription.

Situation Subscription needed for remote personal video?
You watch while connected to the server’s local network Generally no remote-playback subscription is required.
The server administrator has Plex Pass Other users granted access to that server can stream remotely without buying their own Remote Watch Pass.
The administrator has no Plex Pass, but you do Your Plex Pass qualifies you to stream remotely.
Neither the administrator nor you has Plex Pass You need Remote Watch Pass on your account to stream remotely.
You use a Managed Account in the administrator’s Plex Home Remote Watch Pass can apply to Managed Accounts when switched to in a player app. This is not a blanket license for every separate account.
You have a separate full Plex account A Remote Watch Pass bought by another viewer generally does not cover your account.

Plex describes the eligibility choices in its 2025 policy announcement and its Remote Watch Pass overview. You do not need both Plex Pass and Remote Watch Pass for the same remote-video use case.

What are the current Plex Pass and Remote Watch Pass prices?

The figures below are U.S.-dollar reference prices from Plex’s announcements and plan information. The amount offered at checkout can differ with country, currency, taxes, and whether billing is direct or through an app store; check Plex’s current plans page before subscribing.

Plex announced the 2025 Plex Pass increase on March 19, 2025. On April 29, monthly pricing rose from $4.99 to $6.99, annual pricing from $39.99 to $69.99, and Lifetime pricing from $119.99 to $249.99. Existing monthly and annual subscribers moved to the new rate at their first renewal after the effective date; existing Lifetime subscribers were grandfathered in. The announcement is at Plex’s update.

The later Lifetime-only change took effect July 1, 2026: new Lifetime purchases rose to $749.99, while Plex said monthly and annual Plex Pass pricing and Remote Watch Pass pricing were unchanged. Existing Lifetime holders were unaffected. See Plex’s Lifetime pricing announcement.

Remote Watch Pass launched with introductory prices of $1.99 monthly or $19.99 annually. Those prices applied to eligible billing cycles before June 1, 2026; subsequent renewals moved to the listed regular rates of $2.99 and $29.99. Plex’s plans information is available at its plans page.

Plex Pass or Remote Watch Pass: which one fits?

Plex Pass Remote Watch Pass
Best suited to Server administrators with multiple remote viewers, or anyone who wants Plex’s broader premium features. An individual who only needs remote video access to servers shared with their account.
Remote personal-video playback Yes. A server administrator’s pass can let other authorized users stream from that server. Yes, for the subscribing account’s remote access to personal video on servers it can access.
Covers other full Plex accounts A server administrator’s Plex Pass can benefit other authorized users of that server. Generally no; it is tied to the purchasing account.
Additional premium features Includes a broader feature set, such as Skip Intro and Skip Credits, downloads, hardware-accelerated transcoding where supported, DVR-related features, and preview releases. See the current feature overview. Does not include the broader Plex Pass benefits.
Price reference $6.99 monthly or $69.99 annually; new Lifetime purchases are $749.99 from July 1, 2026. $2.99 monthly or $29.99 annually at the regular listed rates.

For a server owner sharing with several people, one Plex Pass on the administrator account may be more practical than asking each viewer to subscribe separately. If you are just one person watching a friend’s server and want no other premium features, Remote Watch Pass is the narrower option. Someone watching only locally does not need either plan solely to satisfy the remote-playback rule.

What changed, and when did it reach apps?

Plex announced both the price changes and remote-video subscription rule on March 19, 2025. The new Plex Pass prices and policy began April 29, 2025, alongside a staged rollout of Plex’s new mobile experience. Apps and platforms did not all change on the same day.

  • November 19, 2025: Plex announced that the remote-playback requirement was coming to Roku. The announcement also described further TV-app and third-party-client expansion during 2026. See the Roku update.
  • April 29, 2026: Plex said the requirement had expanded to Amazon Fire TV and supported Samsung, LG, Vizio, PlayStation, Xbox, and other platforms, in addition to previously affected apps. See Plex’s update.

Exact behavior can still depend on the client’s app version, whether the new experience has reached it, whether it is an official or third-party app, and whether playback is local or remote. Do not assume that a device’s behavior on one date proves that every Plex client has the same rules.

What the remote-playback rule does—and does not—cover

Personal video libraries

The subscription gate is for remote streaming of personal movie, TV, and other video media from Plex Media Servers. Plex calls out remote video in its free-versus-paid feature explanation.

Music, photos, and Plex’s free streaming catalog

Plex said the change does not apply in the same way to personal music streamed through Plexamp or photo libraries in Plex Photos. It also does not unlock or remove advertising from Plex’s free, ad-supported streaming catalog; Remote Watch Pass is for personal content hosted on Plex Media Servers. See the Remote Watch Pass overview and Plex’s announcement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Local playback

Watching on the same local network generally does not require a subscription for remote playback. That does not make local playback, mobile-app limits, and premium features the same thing: each depends on its own app and account rules.

Former one-time mobile activation purchasers

Plex said eligible people who previously bought one-time Android or iOS mobile activation could receive an extended three-month Remote Watch Pass trial. The offer has specific conditions: start the subscription in the Plex Android or iOS app, use the same mobile platform where the original activation was purchased, and use the same app-store account. It is for eligible users without an active Plex Pass or a prior Remote Watch Pass. Details are in Plex’s trial terms.

App-store subscriptions

If you subscribed through Apple, Google, or another app store, management and upgrade steps may differ from a direct Plex subscription. Plex directs subscribers to separate instructions; check the billing channel shown on your account before changing plans. Plex discusses upgrade paths in its Lifetime pricing announcement.

Why paying may not fix a stream that still fails

The subscription rule controls eligibility; it does not repair a server or network connection. A qualifying pass cannot fix unavailable Remote Access, carrier-grade NAT, port-forwarding or firewall problems, insufficient upload bandwidth, unsupported codecs, client incompatibility, or weak transcoding performance. Plex Pass may provide hardware-accelerated transcoding when the server hardware and configuration support it, but it is not a guarantee of smooth playback.

If a remote stream is blocked or fails, check the following in order:

  1. Confirm account eligibility: verify that the server administrator’s Plex Pass is active, or that the viewer’s Plex Pass or Remote Watch Pass is active on the account being used.
  2. Confirm sharing and sign-in: make sure the viewer is signed in to the account that was granted access to the server. A different account’s Remote Watch Pass generally does not apply.
  3. Confirm it is remote: distinguish playback over the server’s local network from playback over the internet.
  4. Update the client: check the app version and use a supported client; behavior can vary during platform rollouts, especially with third-party apps.
  5. Check the server connection: confirm Plex Remote Access is available and review router, firewall, and network restrictions.
  6. Check stream capability: compare the server’s upload capacity and transcoding resources with the remote device’s format support and playback settings.
  7. Confirm the content type: the rule described here applies to personal video, not every Plex service.

Should you pay for Plex or consider another server?

The choice depends more on who operates the server and what features are needed than on one headline price. Plex Pass is the relevant plan to consider for an administrator sharing personal video with several remote viewers, especially if the administrator also values its additional features. For one viewer who only needs remote playback, Remote Watch Pass costs less than the monthly or annual Plex Pass at the listed U.S.-dollar rates. The new Lifetime price is a separate, substantial commitment; it makes sense only if its benefits and terms suit your expected use.

If recurring fees or Plex’s changing remote-playback rules are a deal-breaker, alternatives include Jellyfin, which is positioned as a free, open-source self-hosted media platform, and Emby, another proprietary media-server ecosystem with its own licensing model. Their supported devices, setup requirements, feature sets, and remote-access behavior differ; compare the current details directly at Jellyfin’s downloads page and Emby Premiere before moving a library.
