Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is the best all-round anime series for most viewers: it pairs an accessible fantasy adventure with an expansive cast, carefully connected plotlines and a clear ending. But there is no universally authoritative “best anime ever” list. This ranking weighs craft, character writing, emotional payoff, ambition, influence, durability and how readily a new viewer can get into each series.
The order is a considered editorial judgment, not an awards tally. If you want a short, self-contained start, try Samurai Champloo; for a large-scale adventure, start with One Piece; for reflective fantasy, choose Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End. Streaming availability varies by country and changes over time, so check your local catalog.

How this ranking works
A great series can excel in very different ways: one may tell a tightly finished story, another may build a world across hundreds of episodes, and another may make formal choices that remain distinctive years later. The ranking balances those strengths rather than treating length, popularity or awards as a single measure of quality.
- Craft and payoff: how well the storytelling, character arcs and ending work together.
- Distinctiveness and influence: whether the series has a memorable style or helped define a genre or viewing era.
- Durability and accessibility: whether its appeal holds up and whether a newcomer has a clear way in.
The 10 best anime series ever made
1. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is the strongest all-round recommendation here. Its fantasy adventure follows brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric through a story that gives its ensemble room to grow while steadily connecting personal stakes to a larger conflict. The result is ambitious without losing its sense of momentum, and it reaches a clear ending rather than leaving its central story unresolved.
#1 Best Overall
TechRadar’s May 2025 guide lists the series at 64 episodes and names Crunchyroll, Hulu and Netflix among its streaming options. Those services may not carry it in every region or indefinitely.
2. Attack on Titan
Attack on Titan turns a desperate struggle for survival into a dark-fantasy epic shaped by escalating mysteries, political conflict and large-scale production. Its willingness to change the apparent scope of its story helped make it a defining modern gateway anime. It earns a high place for ambition and impact, though its grim tone is a less welcoming entry point than the adventure and warmth of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.
3. One Piece
One Piece is the great long-form world-building wager: a story that has continued since its 1999 debut, created by Eiichiro Oda, and built around a crew’s expanding adventures. Its scale lets the world and its cast accumulate history in a way a short series cannot. That same scale is the trade-off: it asks for a much larger time commitment than the other picks here.
Rank #2
TechRadar’s 2025 snapshot lists 1,120 episodes and Crunchyroll, Hulu and Netflix as streaming options. The Week identifies the series as one of shonen anime’s “Big Three,” attributing that description to IMDb context in its article. Streaming catalogs differ by location.

4. Hunter x Hunter (2011)
Hunter x Hunter begins with the shape of an inviting adventure and grows into a more psychologically layered story of ambition, strategy and consequence. Its changing conflicts give the series room to surprise without abandoning its core characters. TechRadar’s guide lists 148 episodes and says it is available across several services; it does not name those services in the information available here.
5. Steins;Gate
Steins;Gate is a compact science-fiction thriller built around time travel and the consequences of trying to alter events. Its patient early stretch lays groundwork for later turns, so it is a better fit for viewers willing to let the story gather momentum than for anyone seeking immediate action. TechRadar’s 2025 listing counts 24 episodes, plus an OVA and an alternate episode.
Rank #3
- Elfen Lied Complete Collection [Blu-Ray]
6. Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End starts from a premise that reverses the usual fantasy-adventure emphasis: the great quest has ended, and the story follows what remains afterward. Memory, grief and the passage of time give its fantasy world an unusually reflective center. TechRadar’s 2025 guide lists 29 episodes and recorded a 100% critics score and 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of its snapshot; those figures are dated ratings, not a permanent measure of quality.
7. Mob Psycho 100
Mob Psycho 100 pairs visually distinctive animation with a humane coming-of-age story. Its central appeal is not simply spectacle: it follows a young person learning how to understand himself and relate to others. TechRadar’s 2025 guide lists 37 episodes and 90% audience approval in its snapshot.
8. Samurai Champloo
Samurai Champloo is a concise historical road story with an unmistakable hip-hop-inflected style. Its episodic journey makes it an easy choice for viewers who want a complete-feeling experience without committing to a sprawling saga. TechRadar’s 2025 guide lists 26 episodes and names Crunchyroll among its streaming options.
Rank #4
9. Sailor Moon
Sailor Moon is a defining gateway to magical-girl anime and one of the genre’s most recognizable franchises. Its place on this list rests on its lasting cultural presence and its role as a cornerstone of the genre, not on being the most compact or formally adventurous pick. The Week describes it as a classic and a cornerstone of magical-girl anime.
10. Cowboy Bebop
Cowboy Bebop earns its place with a self-contained space-western premise, jazz-inflected direction and an episodic structure that gives its world room to breathe. Its style and mood are central to its appeal: it is a strong choice for viewers who prefer atmosphere and character to a single continuously escalating plot.

What the 2026 awards say—and what they do not
At the 2026 Crunchyroll Anime Awards, My Hero Academia Final Season won Anime of the Year, as reported by Rotten Tomatoes. The nominees included Dan Da Dan season 2, Gachiakuta, Takopi’s Original Sin, The Apothecary Diaries season 2 and The Summer Hikaru Died. That result is a useful signal of recognition in the 2026 awards cycle; it is not, by itself, a replacement for judging a series’ long-term influence, craft or staying power.
Where to stream the ranked series
Streaming listings are snapshots, not guarantees of current access. TechRadar’s May 2025 guide lists Crunchyroll, Hulu and Netflix for Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and One Piece, and Crunchyroll for Samurai Champloo. It also lists Crunchyroll for several other titles in its guide, including Hunter x Hunter and Mob Psycho 100. The guide’s catalog reflects its own date and coverage; check the services available in your country for current listings.
