Bandai Namco is positioning GUNDAM ASSEMBLE as more than a licensed board game: it wants the build-and-paint miniature game to become a major name in tabletop gaming. The company’s ambition is explicit; market dominance is not yet established. The planned game pairs assembled mobile suits with squad battles, terrain, dice and a growing product-and-event ecosystem.
What does Bandai mean by taking over tabletop gaming?
In its 2025 integrated report, Bandai Namco Holdings said: “Ultimately, we aim to make GUNDAM ASSEMBLE the game that first comes to mind when people think about tabletop gaming.” That is a corporate goal, not a claim that the game has already won the market. The available announcements do not give sales forecasts, market share, or player counts.
The plan is notable because it treats Gundam as a tabletop hobby in its own right. BANDAI SPIRITS says the new BANDAI TABLETOP GAMES brand connects making models with playing a game using them. GUNDAM ASSEMBLE is the centerpiece described so far.
How GUNDAM ASSEMBLE is meant to work
Build and paint the mobile suits
Players assemble miniature mobile suits from parts and paint them before using them in play. The figures are approximately 5 cm tall, according to Bandai Namco’s announcement; the North American store listing says the models are unpainted and require assembly. Bandai has also announced a GUNDAM ASSEMBLE COLOR set from MR.HOBBY, featuring white and blue paints. The official material does not establish that any particular tool or paint beyond the announced set is required.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Fight squad battles on terrain
The game is described as squad-based combat on a map with terrain. Players choose movement and other actions, while dice resolve attacks. Bandai describes the rules as designed for short, decisive matches and gives a minimum configuration of three units per side. The published overview does not provide enough detail to assess rules complexity, match length, balance, or competitive depth.
Use Gundam’s different series together
Bandai says mobile suits from different Gundam works can meet in original scenarios, alongside scenarios that recreate moments from the source material. That cross-series premise is a clear distinction from a game confined to a single Gundam timeline, though the announced material does not specify the full scenario roster.

What is included in Starter Set 01?
The North American official store describes Starter Set 01 as a complete set for 3-on-3 play. It lists six miniatures: RX-78-2 Gundam, Char’s Zaku, Epyon, Wing Zero Custom, Vidar, and Barbatos Lupus Rex. The listed contents also include:
- Six unit cards and 18 tactics cards
- Tokens and scenario objective cards
- A map and cardboard terrain
- Dice, a handbook, and quick-reference guides
The set is therefore presented as an entry point with the core pieces for a small battle, rather than a box that only supplies models. The store lists it at $34.99 in North America and gives an expected release date of November 1, 2026. Bandai’s March 4, 2026 announcement lists a Japanese MSRP of ¥3,850, tax included, and an October 2026 release month. These are market-specific announced figures, not interchangeable prices or a guaranteed universal release date.

When is it launching, and what else has Bandai announced?
BANDAI SPIRITS announced October 31, 2026 as the Japanese launch date, describing a simultaneous global launch with regional exceptions. The North American store instead lists November 1, 2026 as the expected date for Starter Set 01. Dates can differ by market and may change, so local store status is the relevant check for a buyer.
Bandai Namco Entertainment America said five items were planned for the October 2026 launch, followed by monthly releases, with more than 30 items planned across regions within one year. BANDAI SPIRITS’ October announcement names DELUXE SET 01 and EXPANSION PACKS 01–04 among the products being introduced. These are announced rollout plans; they do not confirm that every item will be available in every region or that the planned range has already reached stores.

Does the game have organized play?
Bandai describes the BANDAI TABLETOP GAMES platform as a place to find events, register for official tournaments, record match results, and support event organizers. Its October announcement lists Learn to Play events, Friendly Battles, and a Challenger Cup. This indicates an intended organized-play layer, but the existence of a platform and announced events does not establish how widely events will run or how enduring the competitive scene will be.

For someone asking whether there is a Gundam tabletop game “similar to 40k,” GUNDAM ASSEMBLE is a concrete answer in the sense that it is a miniature-based squad combat game with assembled figures, terrain, cards, and dice. It also has licensed Gundam mobile suits and cross-series scenarios, and its announced starter set is built around a compact 3-on-3 game.

That is where a careful comparison should stop for now. The published information does not establish equivalent rules depth, army-building scope, match duration, price-to-collection value, balance, or competitive history. Those comparisons require the released rules and actual play, rather than the product overview alone.
What Bandai’s ambition does—and does not—show
GUNDAM ASSEMBLE is being launched with more than a starter box in mind: Bandai has described recurring products, cross-series scenarios, and event infrastructure. Together, those elements show how the company hopes to build a lasting tabletop presence around Gundam. They do not yet show adoption, sales success, or market leadership. For now, “take over” is best understood as the scale of Bandai’s ambition, not the game’s proven position.
