Back in Action is an easygoing spy comedy built around the appeal of seeing Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx back together on screen. Its family-meets-espionage premise gives them room to play off one another, but the familiar plotting keeps the movie from feeling like a fresh take on the genre. It is best suited to viewers looking for a breezy action-comedy rather than a sharply original spy story.
What is Back in Action about?
Emily and Matt are former CIA spies who leave that life behind to start a family. When their cover is exposed, they are pulled back into espionage, forcing their domestic routine to collide with the danger and complications they thought they had left behind. Netflix classifies the film as a 2025 PG-13 action film with a runtime of 1 hour 54 minutes.

How well do Diaz and Foxx work together?
The reunion is the movie’s clearest selling point. Diaz and Foxx give the story a lively center, and their contrast helps the domestic-spy setup land as comedy as well as action. The film leans on their screen presence to make familiar situations entertaining; viewers who enjoy the leads are likely to get more from it than those primarily seeking an inventive plot.
Does the action comedy feel fresh?
The film moves between family-life comedy and spy-movie danger, but the plotting is conventional. Its appeal lies more in the performers and the easygoing tone than in surprises or a distinctive new angle on espionage. That makes it a straightforward choice for casual viewing, though its formula may frustrate viewers who want tighter writing or a more original genre story.

Performances and humor
The cast gives the movie recognizable energy, with Glenn Close, Kyle Chandler, Andrew Scott, Jamie Demetriou, McKenna Roberts, and Rylan Jackson among the principal players listed by Netflix. The humor and character interplay are most effective when the film lets its leads carry a scene; the broader spy machinery around them is less memorable.
Action and pacing
Action is part of the film’s appeal, but it does not transform the familiar story into something especially distinctive. The 1-hour-54-minute runtime makes this a feature-length watch rather than a quick episode-sized diversion. Whether that feels breezy or overextended will depend on how much you enjoy its mix of domestic comedy and spy thrills.

What did critics and audiences think?
Aggregator snapshots point to a gap between a largely unfavorable critical response and a more mixed audience response. On October 7, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes showed a 31% Tomatometer from 97 reviews and a 59% Popcornmeter from more than 1,000 ratings. The site’s critics consensus said: “It’s good to have Diaz and Foxx back, but they deserve a warmer welcome than this rote action-comedy.” These scores and counts can change.
Metacritic’s October 7, 2026 snapshot showed a Metascore of 46 from 23 critic reviews, labeled “Mixed or Average.” Its user score was 5.1 from 86 ratings, also labeled “Mixed or Average”; the displayed critic breakdown was 17% positive, 65% mixed, and 17% negative. Those figures describe the listed reviews and ratings, not a definitive verdict on whether an individual viewer will enjoy the film.

- Agent Jay travels back in time to 1969, where he teams up with a younger version of Agent Kay to stop an evil alien from destroying the future.
The difference in tone is visible in the review excerpts collected by Rotten Tomatoes. Ben Travis of Empire called it “A solid action-comedy,” while Jonathan Romney of the Financial Times described it as casual viewing that could play in the background. The split captures the central trade-off: the movie can work as undemanding entertainment, but may not satisfy viewers looking for something more substantial.
