Fact-checkers traced it to a satirical Facebook account, and the actual Super Bowl LX halftime performance did not show him burning a flag.
How the image spread
The image circulated on February 8, 2026, ahead of Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl LX halftime performance. Posts variously presented it as a rehearsal image or as a scene from the show. Lead Stories reported that it first appeared in a February 8 Facebook post by Qbanguy, an account that presents its content as satire. PolitiFact also linked the image to the account and described it as a source of AI-generated satirical images. (PolitiFact; Lead Stories)
What fact-checkers found in the image
PolitiFact reported that Gemini detected an embedded SynthID watermark. It also noted that the depicted U.S. flag had 11 stripes rather than 13 and that silhouettes of the burning flag differed across the audience members’ supposed phone screens. Lead Stories likewise reported an embedded SynthID watermark. These findings support the fact-checkers’ conclusion about this image; no single visual clue should be treated as a universal test for whether any image is AI-generated. (PolitiFact; Lead Stories)
What happened during the actual halftime show
AFP reported that Bad Bunny did not burn a U.S. flag during the performance. He wore an all-white suit, and near the end said “God bless America” as flags representing countries of the Americas appeared behind him. The viral image had circulated before the show, so it did not document the broadcast. (AFP; AFP)
