Matthew Perry was not included in the BAFTA Film Awards’ televised In Memoriam segment on 18 February 2024. BAFTA responded that it planned to honour him at its forthcoming Television Awards in May and on its website memorial page. The organisation’s comments did not explain why he was absent from the film ceremony.
What happened at the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards?
The ceremony took place at London’s Royal Festival Hall on 18 February 2024. During the In Memoriam segment, Hannah Waddingham performed a pared-back version of Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time.” The tribute included figures such as Jane Birkin, Glynis Johns, Carl Weathers, Julian Sands, Tom Wilkinson, Tina Turner, Harry Belafonte, Alan Arkin and Michael Gambon. Perry, who died in October 2023 aged 54, was not included in the televised segment. ITV News reported the omission and ceremony details.
Viewers criticised the omission on social media, as reported at the time. Those posts show that some people objected; they do not establish how widespread that view was. The Independent covered the online reactions.
What did BAFTA say about the omission?
BAFTA’s official account replied to a user: “Matthew Perry will be remembered in this year’s TV Awards ceremony.” In a fuller statement reported the next day, BAFTA said: “We confirm he will be honoured in our forthcoming Bafta television awards in May, and on the in memoriam section on our website.” Sky News quoted the shorter response; ITV News reported the fuller statement.

What did BAFTA’s website memorial say?
The memorial entry linked Perry’s success in Friends to later film roles. As quoted by ITV News and The Independent, it said that his fame “brought film opportunities, including Fools Rush In (1997), The Whole Nine Yards (2000) and its sequel, The Whole Ten Yards (2004), and 17 Again (2009).” ITV News and The Independent quoted the entry.

BAFTA’s reported explanation was that Perry would be remembered at its Television Awards and on its website. The contemporary reports do not disclose why he was left out of the Film Awards broadcast, identify internal selection rules or say that his television career was the reason. Those explanations should not be inferred from the planned TV tribute.
