Azaad is a Hindi period drama whose most compelling relationship, according to Scroll.in’s review, is not the young romance at its center but Govind’s growing bond with a horse. The film also takes on anti-colonial rebellion and feudal power; the tension among those strands is central to whether its story works.
What is Azaad about?
Directed by Abhishek Kapoor and released theatrically on January 17, 2025, Azaad is set in 1920s India. Aaman Devgan plays Govind, a young man who becomes attached to Azaad, the horse associated with rebel Vikram, played by Ajay Devgn. Rasha Thadani plays Janaki, the young woman Govind is drawn to.
The horse’s place in Govind’s life connects the personal story to the danger facing his village. The plot also involves local feudal power, British officials, and Kesar, played by Diana Penty, whose history with Vikram adds another emotional strand. Piyush Mishra plays Rai Bahadur and Mohit Malik plays Tej. The result is part romance, part human-animal drama, and part rebellion story—not a film in which the horse is simply a sidekick.
Why call it a love triangle?
In her January 17, 2025 review for Scroll.in, Nandini Ramnath describes the setup as “The year’s most unconventional love triangle is already here.” It is a playful way to describe how Govind’s interest in Janaki is repeatedly displaced by his fascination with Azaad and the bond he develops with the animal.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That framing captures the film’s strongest point of interest in Ramnath’s account, but it is not a claim that the horse literally replaces Janaki in a conventional romantic plot. The metaphor points to a competition for Govind’s attention—and to the way the horse’s presence can feel more vivid than the romance.
Do the romance, horse story and rebellion fit together?
For Ramnath, the problem is that the strands do not settle into one steady story. She calls the film a mishmash of anti-colonial drama, youthful romance and human-animal interaction, with too many plot lines competing for space. In particular, she says the romance and the landlord’s collusion with the British receive short shrift, while the horse’s action scenes provide a major attraction.

That is the key trade-off in the film’s premise: the horse gives the story a distinctive center, but the surrounding political and romantic stakes need room to develop. Viewers looking primarily for mounted action and the Govind–Azaad bond may find those elements more engaging than the film’s broader narrative; viewers expecting a tightly integrated account of romance and revolt may be less satisfied.
How have critics responded?
Reviews disagree about how well the film’s ingredients work. Shubhra Gupta gave Azaad 1/5 in The Indian Express on January 17, 2025, criticizing its dated treatment of feudal oppression and its underwritten young leads. Gupta also compared elements of the setup and climax with Lagaan.

Rotten Tomatoes’ film page showed seven critic reviews and fewer than 50 audience ratings when accessed in 2026. The critic examples displayed ranged from Gupta’s 1/5 to Firstpost’s 3.5/5. That small, time-specific sample shows a range of responses, not a definitive measure of what audiences or critics generally think.
Across the reviews, the useful questions are whether the plot’s separate strands cohere, whether Azaad’s screen presence and action carry the film, and whether its treatment of the period feels compelling or dated. The answers vary; the evidence does not support a single consensus verdict.

Is Azaad worth watching?
Consider it if the unusual horse-centered premise, period setting, or action is your main draw. The horse is a substantial part of the film’s appeal, rather than a decorative element in a standard romance. Go in with more caution if you want the young romance and the political conflict to receive equally developed, closely connected stories: those are precisely the areas Ramnath and Gupta found wanting.
