Atsuko Tanaka, the Japanese actor and voice actor best known internationally as Motoko Kusanagi in Ghost in the Shell, died on August 20, 2024, at age 61. Her son, voice actor Hikaru Tanaka, announced her death. The family said the specific illness would remain private at her request.
Who voiced Motoko Kusanagi in Ghost in the Shell?
Atsuko Tanaka voiced Major Motoko Kusanagi, beginning with the 1995 Ghost in the Shell film and continuing across numerous later works in the franchise. The official Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 notice describes her portrayal as giving the singular character a quiet, powerful presence. The franchise’s official Stand Alone Complex page also lists her among its cast.
Tanaka’s work helped establish the voice and presence of a character who appeared across multiple adaptations. The franchise spans different films and series, so a credit in one installment should not be taken to mean every version has the same cast or continuity.
What was reported about her death?
Tanaka’s agency said she died on August 20, 2024, following a period of illness and despite receiving care. Her son said she had battled illness for a year, and that the specific illness would be kept private in accordance with her wishes. No diagnosis was disclosed.
