Damini Punia’s book excerpt follows Aurangzeb’s move from Poonch to the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry Regimental Centre in Srinagar, where he began life as a recruit. It is an account of his early days, not a complete biography. Scroll.in published the excerpt on 4 March 2025 from The Extraordinary Life of Rifleman Aurangzeb, published by Penguin Veer. Read the excerpt on Scroll.in.
From Poonch to the regimental centre
In Punia’s account, Aurangzeb had wanted to join the regiment since childhood. Leaving his family for the JAK LI Regimental Centre in Srinagar was his first venture beyond Poonch. The excerpt frames the journey as a major change: a young recruit stepping into military life far from home.
Life among recruits and the idea of “Unity Lines”
The book describes the centre as a multi-faith environment and presents “Unity Lines” as a principle of shared life among recruits. It says a section traditionally brought together Hindu, Muslim and Sikh recruits. These details belong to the excerpt’s account; they should not be read as confirmation of current regimental policy.
The regiment’s history as the book presents it
Punia’s excerpt traces the regiment’s origins to the Jammu and Kashmir Militia in 1947–48 and says it adopted the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry (JAK LI) name in April 1976. This is the historical outline given in the book, rather than an independently verified account of the regiment’s institutional history.

What official records say about Aurangzab’s service
The spelling differs across sources: the book and Scroll.in use “Aurangzeb,” while government records use “Aurangzab.” The Government of India’s award citation records his service with the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry and describes his actions during a cordon-and-search operation at Aqlar on 6 November 2017. According to the citation, he volunteered because he knew the terrain and house layout. After his buddy was grievously injured, Aurangzab brought him to safety, then re-entered the house with his team, in which three terrorists were neutralized. The citation also records that he was abducted on 14 June 2018 while travelling to celebrate Eid, and that he received the Shaurya Chakra posthumously. Read the Government of India’s Shaurya Chakra citation.
The 2018 gallantry list identifies “9115892W RIFLEMAN AURANGZAB” with the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry Regiment and 44th Battalion The Rashtriya Rifles, and marks the award as posthumous. See the PIB gallantry list.

How to read the excerpt
The Scroll.in feature offers a window into the transition from civilian life in Poonch to training and shared regimental life in Srinagar. Its scenes and interior details are narrated through Punia’s biography; official records provide separate documentation of Aurangzab’s unit affiliation, 2017 actions, abduction and award. Keeping those source types distinct makes clear what the excerpt portrays and what government records establish.
