Who is Nathan Mathers to Eminem?

What have the brothers said about their relationship?
Eminem said he wanted to take Nathan in
In a 2004 interview with Rolling Stone, as quoted by The Independent, Eminem recalled: “When he was taken away I always said if I ever get in a position to take him, I would take him.” He also said, “I tried to apply for full custody when I was 20, but I didn’t have the means.” The comments describe an effort to care for Nathan during his childhood, rather than confirming the brothers’ current contact.
Nathan called Eminem a role model
On Hailie Jade’s Just a Little Shady podcast in February 2023, Nathan praised Eminem’s influence on his own parenting. The Independent quoted him saying: “He was the best role model I could have had to help me be the dad that I am today.” That is a clear expression of gratitude and affection, though it does not say how frequently the two speak.

Does Nathan’s post after their mother’s death show estrangement?
No. After Debbie Nelson died in December 2024, Nathan posted, “Hatred and mixed emotions today,” according to The Independent. The post referred to his feelings about his mother; it does not establish that he and Eminem were estranged. The Associated Press’s account of Nelson’s death and her complicated public history with Eminem concerns the mother-son relationship, not the brothers’ current relationship.

The public record supports a close historical bond: Eminem described trying to take responsibility for Nathan when he was young, and Nathan later credited Eminem as a role model. Those statements are not evidence of how often they communicate now. The reporting cited here does not verify their present-day contact, so claims that they regularly speak—or that they have fallen out—would go beyond what is publicly established.
