No. A Pokémon card priced above $300 is not automatically fake, and its price alone cannot establish whether it is genuine. Check the exact card, the seller and the evidence available for that copy; use an independent evaluation or an eligible marketplace authentication service when appropriate.
Does a price over $300 mean a Pokémon card is fake?
No. Pokémon Support confirms that counterfeit merchandise exists, but it does not identify $300—or any other price for an individual card—as a counterfeit cutoff. The sources reviewed also do not establish what percentage of Pokémon cards priced above $300 are counterfeit, so there is no supported probability to assign to this price band.
Price is a reason to verify a listing, not a test of authenticity. Pokémon’s warning about dramatic underpricing specifically concerns booster packs compared with suggested retail price; it does not establish that a particular individual card is fake because it is inexpensive.
How to check a Pokémon card before buying
- Identify the exact card. Confirm its name, set, card number, language and version. Cards that look similar may not be the same printing.
- Compare images. Ask the seller for clear photographs of the front and back, then compare them with official product imagery. Pokémon Support recommends using official images as a reference.
- Use the bright-light check carefully. Pokémon Support says counterfeit cards are often easy to see through when held up to a bright light. Treat this as a useful warning check, not a guarantee that a card is authentic.
- Ask a specialist if uncertain. Pokémon recommends asking a local specialist card shop to evaluate a suspicious card.
- Consider the transaction protections. Check the seller’s terms and return policy, and whether a marketplace authentication service applies to the exact listing.
Raw card or graded card: what gets checked?
A raw card is ungraded and has no grading-company holder. A graded card is sealed in a holder with a label. These are different checks: inspecting a raw card concerns the card itself, while inspecting a graded card through a marketplace service may focus on the holder and label as well as the listing details.

| Purchase type | What to examine | What the check does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Raw or ungraded card | Request clear front-and-back photos; compare the exact card with official imagery; seek a specialist shop’s evaluation if needed. Pokémon Support recommends bright-light inspection and consulting a local specialist. | A photo comparison or bright-light check alone does not prove authenticity. |
| Graded card in a holder | Inspect the holder and label, and check the certification information. PSA describes tamper-evident holders and a conditional guarantee subject to its terms. | A slab is not tamper-proof, and a certification or holder should not be treated as infallible proof. |
What eBay’s Authenticity Guarantee covers
For eligible US listings, eBay describes a physical inspection for qualifying single trading cards at its stated price threshold. Its cited US program pages specify a $200 eligibility threshold for certain listings. That figure is a program requirement—not a counterfeit rate, a general rule for all card listings or evidence that a card is genuine. Check the current rules and confirm that the exact listing displays the Authenticity Guarantee badge; eligibility, geography and grader restrictions apply. The program details were accessed October 7, 2026, and may change.
- Ungraded cards: eBay says inspectors check corners, edges, surface and overall condition against the listing.
- Graded cards: eBay says inspectors check the sealed holder for tampering and verify the case and label.
- Limits: The service does not grade or regrade a card. It applies to eligible single cards, not every card product or listing.
Authentication is a risk-reduction step, not a guarantee that every aspect of a card’s value or condition is correct. Review the listing and transaction terms even when a service applies.

What a PSA holder and guarantee mean
PSA describes its holders as tamper-evident, not tamper-proof: an attempt to violate a holder may leave visible evidence of compromise. That does not mean every holder is genuine or that tampering is impossible. PSA’s guarantee is conditional: its published terms require, among other things, that the certification was active when the card was purchased, and the terms list exclusions. Read those terms rather than treating a slab as an unconditional guarantee.
