Ticket to Paradise is worth watching if you want an easygoing romantic comedy built around George Clooney and Julia Roberts, tropical scenery and familiar star banter. It is less likely to satisfy viewers looking for a fresh premise, tightly built comedy or a romance critics broadly agree feels convincing. The leads’ chemistry is one of the film’s most disputed qualities.
What is Ticket to Paradise about?
Directed by Ol Parker, the 2022 romantic comedy stars Clooney as David Cotton and Roberts as Georgia Cotton, divorced parents who travel to Bali to stop their daughter Lily (Kaitlyn Dever) from marrying someone she has just met. They believe she is repeating the mistake they once made. The setup puts the former couple together on a shared mission, with their own relationship in the background.

Do Clooney and Roberts have chemistry?
There is no single critical verdict. Some reviewers enjoy the stars’ sparring and comic moments; others think the script and setup fail to make the most of their pairing. Time film critic Stephanie Zacharek wrote, “If Clooney and Roberts are both wonderful actors, at this point they’re just not that good together, at least not in this setup.” By contrast, a Time ranking highlights the beer-pong scene as an example of their natural chemistry, and Metacritic’s excerpt of a Playlist review says, “George and Julia spark and sparkle, which is what the trailers promise, and it’s what the movie delivers.”

That split is useful to keep in mind: the movie’s appeal depends partly on whether you enjoy the leads’ comic antagonism, rather than on a universally praised romantic spark. Read Zacharek’s Time review; see Metacritic’s critic-review excerpts.
What do the review scores say?
The available aggregator snapshots point to mixed critical reception. They use different methods, so the figures should not be treated as directly comparable or as objective measurements of whether an individual viewer will enjoy the film.
Rank #2
| Aggregator | Snapshot | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|
| Metacritic | 50/100 from 47 critic reviews; categorized as “Mixed or Average” in its 2022 aggregation. | A divided-to-mixed response among critics represented on the site. |
| Rotten Tomatoes | Apple TV’s page displayed a 57% Tomatometer from 226 reviews (129 fresh and 97 rotten) for the 2022 release. | A mixed snapshot; Apple TV displays the score, but Rotten Tomatoes is the source of the Tomatometer. |

Who is most likely to enjoy it?
It may suit you if you want
- A low-stakes, polished romantic comedy rather than a reinvention of the genre.
- Familiar Clooney–Roberts banter, comic set pieces and a sunny vacation setting.
- A broad second-chance relationship premise that keeps the tone light.
CNN critic Brian Lowry captures the film’s postcard-like appeal: “Think of Ticket to Paradise like a postcard of beautiful people having fun in a beautiful place and you’ll get along just fine.” A Time ranking also calls it an enjoyable romp and singles out the beer-pong sequence. Metacritic’s review compilation includes Lowry’s excerpt; the Time ranking discusses the comic set piece.

You may want to skip it if you prioritize
- An original or intricately plotted screenplay.
- Comedy with consistently sharp jokes.
- A romance whose emotional credibility and lead chemistry are widely agreed upon.
These are matters of taste, not guarantees: critical opinion is mixed, and the film’s star-centered appeal will land differently depending on what you want from a rom-com.
